Technically I guess this could be in the wanted section...But anyway..

Does anyone actually have one of these in their collection?? I've been casually searching for a while but haven't been able to locate one. Figured I put out a roll call just to see how many are actually in collectors hands. My buddy has been bugging me to get a Gauntlet forever as it's his grail, I'll admit I like it but I don't know if I want to tackle the 4 player monster cabinet.

I have always asked myself why so few were seen. I guess the original numbers made were few and far between. I like it a lot since it reminds me of the cute Rolling Thunder type cabinet (or is it the same exact cab)?

Good luck if you eventually locate one.

Can a 4p Gauntlet board be changed to a 2p via different roms (like TMNT, Simpsons can?) Didn't know if Atari was similar to Konami in that way with their designs...

I actually had one. I really wasn't too impressed with it.
In my opinion, I would rather deal with the larger heavier four player cabinet.
The general setup for the two player is very bad. I got rid of if.
I've got both the 1 and 2 cabuinets in my arcade collection.
The four player has a much better setup for playing.

Gauntlet is decent, I had a 4 player one myself. It is big, but the players are forced to wrap around the CP so it takes up less room than you think.

This is one of the games that loses its value once it becomes home use. In the arcade, you fought like crazy to last as long as you could because it would chew through your allowance in a hurry. Once its in your house, you just coin the bitch up to the max and after you press that start button to continue, fun = lost.

Still a good time though, I liked it.

The 4 player arcade versus the 2 player uses the same board its just that you only connect the first 2 players.
It actually uses the same wiring as well, it just is spliced to make it a 2 player.

Can you elaborate on that??? The worst thing that could happen is to finally find one and then be dissapointed in the control layout....

Absolutely.
The speakers are positioned just above the control panel.
The monitor sits very high, due to the speakers being directly below the monitor.
The control panel, in my eyes, is very cluttered and is very hard for 2 people to play.

I have one. Another collector local to me has one. I've seen two others sell in CA in the last two years. As for control layout, I can't really comment as I haven't played a 4 player in so long. Although I might speculate that the 4 player would seem crowded with four players since most of us are bigger than we were when we played these BITD.

I'm not sure what the production numbers were on the 2 player cabs, but with the horizontal monitor and two joysticks, they were prime candidates to be Jammatized. I bet a lot of them became random conversions.

I think production was 499 or 599 dedicated cabs. Kind of an odd number. I think there were some kits too.

IIRC atariscott recently sold one of these.

There was a dedicated Gauntlet two player cab about five years ago at an auction in Columbus.

And in the early 90s, an arcade in Maryland converted their four player Gauntlet II into Spider-Man, then installed the Gauntlet II guts in a Scramble upright as a two player cabinet. I almost bought it for $150 back then, but decided against it.

Kyle

I've seen at least two for sale recently on craigslist in california and they were not much money, maybe a few hundred they sat for a while I think.

I think one of them had both boards too. I just looked around but they are gone. I am not sure they sold. I'll keep an eye out for them again.
