I picked up 100 1N4001 diodes. A coil is showing up tomorrow that will need a diode. pinrepair says to use 1N4004 on coils. It is the knocker coil on a system 6 Alien Poker. Radio shack sells 25 for $3 so I can get some no prob.

SG1-23-850-DC

1N4001 diodes are rated at only 50V. Your coil voltage is most likely right at that or slightly above. The OEM uses the 1N4004 for longevity and to account for spikes, excessive heat etc.. I wouldn't replace a 1N4000 series diode with a lower number for this reason. I would only go up in number 1N4005, 6, 7 etc..

Well, when we install diodes across relay coil in the aircraft industry, they are always 1N4007. Just my 2 cents.

For an alien poker the 1N4001 are fine..... coils in a System 6 game run at around 30v or so, and that's the normal size diode for those machines.

I saw they went to 50 V and figured it would be border line. I think I will pick some 1n4004 tonight. I seem to go a bit overboard with all my work on these machines as a preventive measure, so might as well do that here.

Thanks for the replies.

So my parts showed up today :)

I was looking for a SA-23-850-DC, contacted Terry and he said a SG1-23-850-DC would work if I put a diode on it. It came with a diode on it. Googling around it seems the 23 is the wire gauge, and the 800 is wraps. So as long as the sleeve is the right size it should work fine.

Hope I can get the plunger out of that burnt coil ;)

I got the transistor and predriver bits ready to get swapped out. Should be fun times.
