19v2000 Basics?

Been busy with other people's monitors this week, but I did manage to take this one apart a bit. I used a plastic screwdriver to remove the anode and didn't get any pops, so... :fingerscrossed:

Finally got started on this. Got the bottlecap transistors done and a few of the caps. I noticed that the flyback looking thing looks a bit off. Also the cable from it to the anode cup came apart. Is that normal?

Is the whole thing replaceable? I think it's lableled T900 on the board.

Edit: Ok, apparently this thing is the HV transformer.

No, not normal. That needs to be a sealed and reliable connection, or it will be deadly dangerous

Are you familiar with the anode voltage discharge procedure?

Can you do a pic of the lead coming apart?

If the procedure is different from a raster monitor, then no. I actually didn't discharge it at all, I used a plastic screwdriver to remove the anode cup.

I'll get some pics tomorrow. Is there anywhere I can buy a new HV transformer? I checked with Bob and Chad, but didn't see it.

The HVT is not available as far as I know, I tried a while ago.

Do you have a way to take a pic?

Discharge procedure is necessary, and the same as a raster monitor. Attach a lead and alligator clip to the screwdriver, and hold on to the end of the insulation away from the metal part of the screwdriver. Alligator clip goes on the braided dag ground cable

You were very lucky :)

Well shitballs, how am I supposed to fix it then? I can discharge it and get pics tomorrow.

Yeah, a pic would help. You can do a little cleaning and resoldering if needed. If it came apart at the cup, then you can pull the cup back on the wire and resolder the end to the plug under the cup. If the insulation around the white is coming apart... you're probably just going to have to wrap the hell out of it with some electrical tape or re-dip the wire in some insulating plastic (used to dip the handles of tools in)... but I'm not 100% sure how well that will hold up in the long run.

While you're there, and everything is good and discharged, removing and cleaning the big diode probably isn't a bad idea either. Clean the (what used to be) grease off of it with soapy water and put some new dielectric grease on it.

You're already covering the big issues (IME) with replacing the big transistors. You'll probably end up wanting to keep a few of those on standby. I have a BattleZone here (same monitor) that used to chew through those (and the fuses) like it was going out of style. I just, a few months ago, got the thing to start behaving by replacing all of the mica insulators with new ones (my replacements in the rebuild kit I got didn't come with any).

Got some pictures.

Here's the HV transformer, is that leakage at the top?

Here's where the line came apart.

This is what the end with the anode cup on it looks like.

This is the end that is attached to the HV transformer.

I can push both ends back together, but this is as far as they go. It doesn't seem snug at all.

Help!

First picture looks fine, just some silicone. Should be good.

The last 3 pictures are normal as well, that's the HV diode in there. The 3rd picture is actually the end of the diode (see that little nub of a lead?).. That's supposed to come apart. It SHOULD be a little snuggish though... I mean, it shouldn't just fall apart or anything.

Looks pretty normal to me.

That's a relief. The pcb actually has little clips in it to hold the line, so I guess maybe those keep it together. So I just slide it back on there and it's fine?

I'll continue with the rest of Bob's kit and see what happens.

Got the rest of the kit in tonight, but ran into a snag with the large filter caps. The old ones have 3 legs, while the new ones have two. The pcb is labeled + and - so I'm guessing the 3rd leg is just for stability?

The other problem is that the legs on the new caps are too narrow to fit into the holes in the pcb. I thought about soldering wire onto each leg and then into the holes, but there really isn't a good place to strap the cap afterwards. What do you guys do here?

Edit: Answering my own questions - Got the legs to fit by bending them a bit. Bob says to just solder the 3rd hole shut.

Nice. You probably feel just like I did about a year ago when I got mine up and running. Just got Braze's new AD multi-game kit yesterday. Gonna install it tomorrow probably.

Doesn't it have Moon Patrol on it? How does that work with only buttons?

Good work! Are the Braze kits available to all now?

I signed up on his notification page for it and I got an email saying he had a limited number of them ready to go if I wanted one. I paid for one immediately. I didn't realize I lived so close to him so I got it like the next day. I just finished installing it and so far, so good.

It's Lunar Lander, actually. I've never played it with the thruster controller so it works fine for me. Actually I never played LL until tonight. Takes some patience to play it well. He does have the "Low Fuel" sound turned off because of a technical issue using the pokey. He has the details on his site.
