1983 Mario bros cabinet restore?

I guess if they bother you that much you could do that. Problem is, when you 'restore' a game, usually it is best to get it back to how it left the factory. If it is an interior thing like changing the power supply due to faulty design, or changing the material to something more resilient, I am all for it. But when you change the exterior hardware, cosmetics or overall appearance of that being restored because "you really don't like how they did it", are you really restoring it? Not that I haven't made my share of 'improvements' in the 15-20 games I've restored, but for some reason, 'the bolts thru the sideart' thing that Ninty cabs have appeals to me. If you don't like it though, by all means do what makes you happy. Not sure it really matters in the big picture. With Mario Bros, it's only 2 bolts after all. In fact, I used to restore DK cabs with all 5 bolts on the sides. Then I realized, those 3 H bolts were put there with conversion in mind. I now just allow the 2 V bolts to stay and fill the other 3 holes. I guess I must be evolving.

I agree. Keep it original regardless how I personally feel about it. I was curious how you restored the cab. Paint or vinyl?

I was going to paint the whole cabinet. I got the front and rear painted black. The sides were really in bad shape (looked like it was drag across rocks on each side). It would take a lot of prep work to paint. I still filled in the really bad spots with bondo since I repaired the front and back. I ordered 2 sheets of orange laminate for each side to cover up the blue (DK conversion). I figured countertop laminate would hold up better than paint against scratches. The orange laminate it a shade lighter from the original mario bros orange. I figured no one would notice unless you have another mario cabinet to compare.

So the front, (CP base, front plate and top and back) was painted and only the sides have vinyl? I know, dumb questions... I just would like to know your methods.

Nope, the whole cab was painted, then vinyl was applied to the sides, speaker panel and kickplate. The cab was disassembled then reassembled. The only surfaces not receiving vinyl were the roof, base, back and the insides of the side panels.

I plan to make my conversion cabinet look like the one in the pictures what Phet and SpartyMac posted but have laminate orange sides (instead of painting) with the mario vinyl decals.
