1983 Atari Arcade Star Wars With Video Problems

Looks like alot of monitor problems, not seeing any real color differences. Has the monitor been rebuilt.

The rest could be the instruction proms on the main board. Those legs rot, and the socket go bad.

Yes on the full rebuild of the k6100. It has been test run on my tempest. No issues on the monitor. Voltages on AR Board / Brick are correct. The issues are in the PCB.

I take it you are referring to 7h-7L?

Yeah those are the ones.

the first place I would start would be with the z output on the analog circuit, you might have a bad dac08. you'll just have to put a scope on the inputs and outputs to see what's going on with it.

I will scope it. There is colour differences between the cannons and other items on the screen. They are red as they should be. I just wish I had another set of spare boards. I have a full working Star Wars, but I wont mess with it. I'm trying to help a friend on this one. I traded the 6809 on the Sound board, it now plays to the end of the tunnel but it does not destroy the death star. It does fire. I do not hear it killing the side turrets either down the tunnel.

What does the bip test screen look like? Kinda looks like you've got some major bip problems. Don't recall off hand what pot they are. Don't have a manual handy atm.

Major progress so far.

What was the z problem?

I have access to a few more SW avg pcb's. One is semi working, that is what you are looking at now. I can align the boxes but when you flip back to the cross hatch, it is the same as before. If I can get one going, that will be the key to repairing a few more.

It falls apart when it gets small. On AV PCB board 2.

I believe I have tracked down a major issue.
On the AV PCB in the first video. I need to
socket the dac 08 at 8f to confirm.
I piggybacked it, and there was major change regarding
the screen. I see colour and
a starfield I still have a major brightness probably from
the DAC that is still on the board. I will be picking up
a 16 pin socket tomorrow. Out of supplies darn it.
I'm crossing my fingers.

Ah, then it could be a scaler problem. Those are the 2 areas I would look at, scaler being the first place.

As for the Dac08, yeah if you have shorts in the old dac on board, that could bleed through during piggybacking.

I'm tracing just about all of my Tempest problems to the sockets. I was using a big mirror so I can get around back and push on / wiggle the chips, and just about everyone is showing to be flakey. Replace the socket and no more badness on that one. I'm gonna replace all of them.

I wonder if you haven't lost the red signal, and that signal is not being feed into the z dac??

Have you scoped the inputs and compared them to one of your other boards?

More changes by piggybacking the 2nd DAC08 at 6D.
Now the screen sequence is correct except for the green lines going out from the center.
My goal is to socket it tomorrow and see if there is more change.
I'm having issues regarding my oscilloscope. My probe needs to be replaced.

The starfield is 7H Prom 110. That was the bad prom on my main board.
If I can get the colour issues straitened out, definitely a learning curve,
I'll be in great shape.
I'm more use to Tempest issues. So far I've redone 7.
And I know I won't be able to mess with this until Sunday.
Birthday party tomorrow.
Thanks for the help so far...

Yeah I'm more the Tempest as well. The video sections are similar, the Z is definitely different.

Sometimes they just take time.
