1980's Mello Yello Q*bert Ad Campaign

Found this online. Maybe some better art to start with...

Any sheet metal workers out there? I'd love to mount these toppers to a large piece of flat aluminum sheeting, bent just right to stand up straight and with a tab to slide under the marquee bracket. Think PC-10 Topper mounting bracket blown up.

Whoa, better yet, does anyone bend plexi? Kinda like prOk did for his TRON toppers? Maybe just bend an inch wide tab all across the bottom edge, and then have a mounting window about the size of a Mappy marquee sticking straight up. That way it could even be backlit.

We could probably do an alternate version for 7-11 Q*bert as well. Anyone have any cool information on that version?

I feel like I'm talking to myself, but look at the store where the latest Mello Yello Q*bert machine was found:

Awesome.

Anyone have that magazine laying around? I'd love to scan and frame that article.

just saw this thread myself......
I have a stack of that magazine but don't believe i have that one. I'll thumb through the box though nonetheless. I'll also ask a few other coke collectors if they have one. I wouldn't mind picking up another stack of them to go through.

You ever find this issue? I am starting work on this topper and would love to have as much source material as I can get my hands on.

Sorry, don't know how I missed this thread. Phet, YOUR Qbert that I have does not have a coindoor, that is the only difference cosmetically. It also does not have a knocker or it hasn't worked since I've had it. Just realized this last week, will hopefully take a look this weekend. But back to topic, I would take a topper. Free of charge seeing it's YOUR machine ;)

Probably just doesn't work. I'll bet it's there.

That would definitely make a cool topper for Q*Bert. I wonder how it would look if someone was to Photoshop Q*Bert drinking the Mello Yello from a straw like they show on the intermission screen.

The topper is a great idea, and I'd be in the market for one for sure.

RE: the 7-Eleven version mentioned earlier, the code in the intermission screens between Mello Yello and 7-Eleven is very very similar. In fact the Big Gulp initially didn't look right because it was missing the dome shaped top, because at the time of discovery, it was running partial Mello Yello code for the flat top of the can.

I thought slurpees used the curved top and big gulps use a flat top.....

Two things:

Not so much digging the shadows on Q*bert and the can, looks out of place.

Maybe use a non-dazed Q*bert image. He looks like he just took a pull of some meth.

I worked on this a bit more last night. I went back to the original retro can and will try a few more layout ideas. I am working on this in brief spurts, so it will take me a little while to get it where I like it. I was using a few fuzzy jpgs as a starting point, I think I finally found some good vectorized Qbert art to tweak and then add into the design.

I believe I have a vectorized marquee file that I downloaded if you need it... Just remember to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simply Simple) when designing something like this. Really, I could picture Q*bert large in the foreground, 2/3's of the pyramid in the background and the large can on the left... The top of Q*bert and the Can should be die cut out! Less type! "Be Sure to Enjoy a Fresh Mello-Yello while playing Q*bert".

I'm not trying to art direct ... This is your project ... But, looks like a fun project.

Modern day they do. I believe the slurpee was always the dome. Not sure if the big gulp started with a flat top then moved on to the peaked milk carton top with the plastic clip or if the milk carton style came first then became the standard plastic flat top. I would think by the time of this promo they were using the milk carton top or should I say container since it wasn't a removable top but actually the top end of the cup that folded to the milk carton style top that you would punch the hole for the straw.
