1954 Gottlieb Woodrail pinball...

Does this seem a bit fishy?

I know these woodrail games are harder to find, but I find it hard to believe that this game, in need of quite a bit of work, is commanding this kind of money. Possible shilling going on? Maybe these old timers fetch this kind of money? But I doubt it.

I was expecting to click that and see 8 grand or something.

I don't think that is an unreasonable price. I wouldn't pay it but I wouldn't cry shill over it. There are lots of woodrail collectors and the rarer games can command a high price.

The playfield is in beautiful condition. I won't be surprised to see it go a lot higher.

I don't have any pre 1970's pinball games in my collection and admittedly don't really care for them much. I'm sure there are people that love them and are willing to pay that kind of money for nice examples of a rare, hard to find game. Just not me.

A couple years back I had a chance to buy a 1940's era woodrail game called Air Force from a neighbor. It was so rare there wasn't any pictures on the various pinball sites on the internet. It was in rough shape playfield wise, but the backglass was picture perfect. I probably could have got it for $100.00 or so, but had no interest in it. To each his own I guess.

There are lots of pinballs that are rare but not valuable. Rare does not always equal valuable. Most of the woodrail collectors I know of are older and collect them because they're the games they played as a kid. It's easier to understand why someone would pay so much for what many would consider to be a boring old game when put in that context.

Yeah, I know what you mean. To a lot of collectors the 60's & 70's era EM pinballs are boring, especially when compared to the newer, fancier pinball games. But I grew up playing the EM machines and love playing them, even though a bunch of younger players find them boring. Of course, I also love the newer, flashier, fancier pinball games as well. Just depends on what people have fond memories from their youth.
