I have a Capcom 1942 pcb set and i am wondering if i can just insert the Williams 1942 rom set to convert it to the Williams 1942 version.

I bet you can. You could try first in mame: replace the roms in the main 1942 zip with the ones in the williams one, making sure you rename the williams ones to match the names of the main ones if necessary. That ought to give some level of confidence that it would work.

damn good idea. i am really going to have to reaquaint myself with mame!

I would be surprised if it didn't work. I pulled both of my 1942 boards (both Capcom) and they look exactly like the picture of the Williams board, minus the Williams sticker.

the following link shows the roms that presumeably are the diff ones between 1942.zip (capcom 1942 ?) and 1942w.zip (williams 1942 ?) http://picasaweb.google.com.au/lh/photo/77rJ-AuL__NNMWriFBsONw?feat=directlink

i ran a binary comparison and they appear to be the equivalent roms (ie the two with f2 in the name matchup, and the ones with "n" followed by a digit matchup with the ones with "m" followed by the matching digit) with a few diffs here and there in some files, and some significant diffs in others.

i'll have to have a crack at mame and swapping the roms to confirm the game maker in each set and if swapping the roms still work! in which case, i can then convert the capcom boardset to the williams game by swapping 6 roms!

more to come.

so to the question: can i use the williams 1942 roms to replace the relevant capcom 1942 roms to convert my capcom 1942 board to williams 1942 ?

i replaced six files in the 1942.zip with six from the 1942w.zip file (different names in each set so had to rename them)

fired up mame, tested each of 1942 and 1942w and this worked, the only exception being an error reported by mame, presumeably because some or many of the CRC bytes no longer matched up to that known by mame for those i replaced in the 1942.zip set. so, i guess i'll have to suck it and see! any hints as to how to fix the crc info for mame so it doesnt complain ?

next step: burning 6 new roms for the capcom board, using the matching 6 williams 1942 roms.

That's just what mame does. It knows what the roms are supposed to be, and when it loads them and determines they're changed, it complains. It'll still work though. If you really want to eliminate the warning you could always edit the mame source and compile your own exe.
