19" WG Monitor turning off and coming back on during gameplay...

Hello I have a monitor that is turning off then slowly coming back on during gameplay. Just recently picked up the cabinet cheap at a garage sale. The game in it is sunset riders, and the picture looks fine, game plays fine, but at one point the monitor went black, then came back on after about 20 seconds. you can still hear the game playing while the monitor isn't showing the picture.

I tried a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles board in it and had the same problem...game was going along fine for about 5-7 minutes, then monitor went black for about 30 seconds before coming back on.

I don't know if this is an easy fix, or just something to live with. It appears it is a WG monitor with Philips tube...I measured it and it is 19" diagonally. I have zero experience working with monitors so far, so these are the numbers I was able to read off of the back...

Any information would be greatly appreciated. One more note...the first two times we played the game there was no problem. after opening up the control panel and the coin doors this issue happened. I don't know if maybe a wire is loose as a result of opening the coin door or something, so maybe that is a possibility, I just don't know where to start looking for this kind of issue. Thanks.

I would say check your b+ voltage. Also ensure you have a solid ground (power plug with 3rd pin present) and/or add a wire from the power supply to the monitors frame..
Coinicidence it started after you messed with the CP and coin door ... I dunno.

Look for loose connections from moving the game... something may have come loose.

Check every wire connection...

Had a similar problem that turned out to be simple. The connection from the power supply to power the monitor in my centipede was not making good contact. I finally diagnosed the problem by bumping the machine on accident during gameplay.

Yeah, that could be it.

I've dealt with two other WG monitors that did something similar but had other causes than the loose power connector:

1) I was playing a game and died. I was upset I died so I banged the control panel with my fist. The monitor (K7901) shut off but the game was still playing. Hit it again and the monitor came back on. After a few Fonzie impersonations, I eventually figured out I had a cold solder joint on a connector from the chassis to the neckboard.

2) Had a customer with a driving game. After the game was on for 10-15 minutes it would go black. iI you turned it off for a bit, you could turn it back on again and it would work for a while before going black again. Eventually found a cold solder joint on a resistor along the very back edge (K7500).

yeah im thinking cold solder, caps, or loose neckboard, weak power into the monitor, etc

if you get a chance take some pics.. would be nice to see what were dealing with.

Does it have a remote adjustment board? If so, check the solder joints for cracks on the pots. I have seen a few of the WG remote boards do this.

He and I have PM'd back and forth - I'll post for him.

It appears that the paper shroud had staples in in. When the shroud came loose it had layed itself over the chassis. WE SPECULATE that the movement given to the cabinet caused that staple to move enough to tap a component causing the reset. I couldn't believe it.

Yeah...what he said. It hasn't turned off since I took out the paper shroud with the staples in it. I have tested it 3 times since and had the game on for over an hour each time. I won't be sure that the problem is fixed for a little while though, as it was kind of random when it would turn off before I removed the shroud. For instance, it happened after 10-20 minutes the first time, then I powered off and on, and it stayed on for an hour and then turned off. Then the next time it was like every 10 minutes or so, and then I went 2 hours with no incident twice after removing the paper.

I'll keep you guys posted if the problem re-surfaces. Thanks for the help.

So here's my update...the issue is still present (staple apparently wasn't the culprit). A couple of days after I was hoping it was fixed it acted up again in the same fashion. I've been busy so I haven't had time to get back to it, but I finally found a model number on the monitor, hopefully this will help get me in the right direction.

It's a WG 19k7901. Any ideas? I remember it was suggested that I check the B+ Voltage. Where can you check the B+ voltage on this monitor. Thanks for help.

does it shut off all at once or does it gradually fade to black? got something very similar on my 7171, but the monitor doesn't lose power, the whole pic just fades black and then tapping on the monitor frame it seems makes it come back.

well, DID, one last time I reseated the neckboard and seemingly the problem has gone away. we'll see.

When the monitor turned off it didn't fade off, just went black quick, like the power was shutting down.

I took a look at the PCB behind the monitor and on the upper right portion of the PCB, right where it says 'SHUT DOWN' (HV Shutdown?) there is some orange substance dried onto the board. I took some pictures that I will attach. I don't know if maybe something leaked onto this area of the board, or what (this is my first monitor issue I've encountered so I don't know if it's supposed to be there or not, doesn't look like it should be though). I also attached some other pictures of the back of the monitor in case that helps.

If anyone knows what this orange stuff might be, and whether it needs to be cleaned off let me know. Also, anyone know where I should be checking voltage back there? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

wiggle the video input connector.. does the issue come and go? if so theres cracked solder connections at those pins...

pull the chassis, cap it, and check for krappy solder. I guarantee theres some somewhere...
also lookover the flyback.. see any cracks??? if so REPLACE IT...

the goop on the shutdown pot was put there form the factory so people wouldnt adjust it lol

if your uncomfortable doing all the caps i would at least replace all the large ones and the two caps to the left of the shutdown pot... those caps look original to me and should be replaced.

bob roberts sells cap kits and flybacks cheap.. www.therealbobroberts.net
