I will be picking up a bunch of 19" tv's to convert to CGA monitors with the Alva chassis. They have RCA and Zenith tv's. Does anyone know, or have a guess, of which would be better to convert? Is it likely that either will work?

pull the backs off of the tv's

edit: discharge tubes

use your meter to read the yoke's (improperly i might add but it seems to get the job done)
count the pins on the neck's
then order the proper chassis for that tube/yoke.

They most likely will all work the same and last a few years with home use.

Thanks for the reply.

I won't be able to do any of that until I get the tv's home, and by that time, it will be too late. So you are saying that both the RCA and Zenith will likely be able to be converted?

If you are using a universal chassis, you will most likely be able to use all those TV tubes, unless some of them are too old and have weird necks.

If you were specifically trying to get these to use with original chassis', then it would be important to check the tube first....

Nah, I'm going to order some Alva universal chassis. I'm going to get 20 or so TV's so I have enough spares to last my great-great grandchildren the rest of their lives.

First off you can check my list:

http://www.junknet.net/donor-tvs

but as Mod said they can prob accomodate any tubes. What I would watch for are any yellowed tubes that may be nicotined or aged. Other than that you should be good to go.

Both RCA and Zenith are excellent brands as far as donor tvs, if you look at my list you'll see a lot of them readily-swappable-to-real-chassis are from Zeniths.

If you do pick up a bunch, try to database what you find as far as what tubes are in what makes/models to help build up my list!

PS - You said you have to go an hour, which direction are you going that hour, towards Philly?

North-east, towards State College. If I were going an hour towards Philly, that would put me half way to Harrisburg. I am 4.5 hours from Philly. It's one heck of a drive. I am closer to DC, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg....

I will blog my monitor adventures on here for you guys.

So Saturday afternoon, we are getting my son's kart loaded up to go to his kart race, and this guy with the 19" tv's calls me, and wants to know if I can come get the tv's NOW. I told him it is at least an hour drive, but I will leave NOW to meet him at his hotel where the tv's are. So I rush the kid and wife in the truck, and head out to the hotel. Once I get to the hotel, the front desk guy tells me that the owner "had to leave suddenly" and that the tv's are locked in a storage room. So I call the owner, and get no answer. So...we leave the hotel and head for the kart track, with still enough time to get ready to race. Halfway between the hotel and track, the guy calls my cell, and apologizes, and asks if I want to turn around and go back and meet him. I told him it was too late, I was already 15 miles away.

So...we went racing, and the TV's can rot in hell. I hate rushing around to meet someone, and then have them not be there.

So....who has a 19" tube for me?
