16 Million on Punch-Out!!

Slightly off topic, did anyone here have the opportunity to witness any records being set BITD, I'm talking early 80s? One possible explanation is that they did not scrutinize setting back then like they do now. Back then do you think they expected to still be doing this some 3 decades later? Seems to me like setting could be an easy and logical way to explain some of these (seemingly impossible) records.

[edit] This obviously does not apply here, the record was set with referee in 2004.

I can't even get on the frickin' leaderboard of the game!!!

The game is hard as hell.

Jow, are you playing using Twin Galaxy settings? I am. Having trouble for sure getting far into the game.

Yeah, my game is set to TG settings, but with the Free Play chips, I will be screwed.

Doesn't matter, as my HS is only 170,xxx. I can get to the 2nd Bald Bull and thats it.

I am pretty sure that record 'score' is much older.
On 6/11/2004 Twin Galaxies basically 'verified' many older unknown settings scores.
The most likely bogus 720 score is the same.

That would make me feel better.

Maxim Recoil is the SPO record holder w/ 1 million and change. That seems feasible. 16 million on PO doesn't.

Or, I just suck that bad ;)

Really? If this is true, and I find it very easy to believe, then how can anyone claim that TG has any credibility at all?

I didn't witness any records back in the day, but I do remember a guy marathoning Q*Bert at the local mall. Seems like he played for a day or two, before the game quit. My mom took us down there for awhile, and he had enough men stored in reserve that he could run to the bathroom, get a snack, etc. Of course, this wouldn't apply to Punch Out, since you lose once and you're done.

One of my Little League coaches allegedly went to some world championship contest for Qbert, but came in third. His license plate said "Q BERT". I say allegedly because I have searched for him on Twin galaxies and the internet in general and haven't found shit.

They did scrutinize settings back then however they did not disqualify people for glue in the wrong spots of the pcb. :p This Punch Out score is not impossible at all. I knew people who would regularly score as close to 1 million as possible. It does not really get any harder after a point.

Can you shed any light into the other posters contention that a bunch of old records were entered in 2004? If this is true, it would be impossible to say for certain that TG settings were in fact followed, no?

I really don't know anything about that but an old friend of mine from high school who had the T&F WR before FLY took it recently was pretty good at several games including Punch Out and I have personally witnessed many games up to as close to a million as you can get and maybe some roll overs. There was never really a point in playing the game any further since we were all about getting initials up. Granted it would be tough to play that long but I don't recall how long it takes to get a million. I expect it's more doable then say Defender or Stargate where you have to play for three days or something crazy like that.

My original post wasn't questioning the legitimacy of the scores, more being in awe that any of them were possible. I don't have the time to put into these games to be good enough to reach scores like that, and I'm amazed at some of the records that were set. Props to all of them.

No one said you did Jow, I merely was looking at the possibility that they are in fact tainted. They may well not be, I have no idea. If "old" scores were added en masse in 2004 (and I have no reason to think they are save for what the poster said earlier), those would certainly be suspect, no? Personally I really only care about the initials on my machines (well okay and dropping them in on other's as well). XXI21, you're #2 on my M.C. now sucka! Next time I'll have to make sure that "track ball malfunction" happens before you beat my score so I don't have to spend hours taking it down... ;)

But there were bootlegs and alternate ROM sets which were never documented.

Well yes. I'm guessing they would treat those as different games. Like Crazy Kong v.s. Donkey Kong.

Their justification for disqualifying modern kits and things like the Williams vanity rom mod, free play mods etc. is complete bull shit imo though considering their highly questionable verification methods and their general m.o. of taking favorites.
