I'm building a 60-in-1 cocktail from an empty cab and was considering my monitor options. Do widescreen lcds look right, or should i find a 4:3 LCD? I prefer the look of crts to lcds but i was curious about the aspect ratio if i went this route.

thanks!

4:3!

It's going to look awful with a 16:9

Honestly, if you want a CRT in there find yourself a Sony PVM Broadcast monitor, they are cheap on ebay and craigslist (I got a 14" for $40) and almost all of them accept RGB signals straight from an arcade board. Your going to spend more time and money hooking up an LCD up to a 60-in-1 board than you will plugging it right into a PVM. Plus LCDs look like garbage with a low res source like a 60-in-1

Plus PVMs are completely contained (safer) and easier to wire up than an arcade monitor, Although you may need to add some resistors to the RGB lines, I had issued with distortion and blown out pictures on my PVM until I added a few resistors)

4:3

A 19" computer monitor from a thrift store/discount electronics store can be had for cheap.
Around here I see 19" 4:3 LCD's at a discount electronics store sub $100 and on Craigslist cheaper than that. Getting harder to find 4:3 LCD's it seems.

I like the look of the xx-in-1 on an LCD and they are easy to mount and much lighter than a CRT. :)

YMMV.

Cool, Thanks for your response guys!
Yeah, I had a feeling 4:3 was the way to go. I was just entertaining the possibility that 16:9 would be more optimal in the vertical orientation, but it would probably just distort it.

Finch: Hi neighbor! Thanks for the pvm tip. I bought a 60-in1 from nick and it has VGA out. I just found a guy selling a 19" crt for $5 near my work. I'm gonna experiment and see what that looks like..

Do you know if that pvm monitor would work on a med-res Atari System II board?

thanks again!

Oh ok, yea if you already have VGA out then that makes things much simpler, I forget a lot of them have it. I'd think it would still look better on a CRT computer monitor than an LCD, so that 19" you mentioned should look pretty good.

I'm not entirely sure if it would work on medium res games. Part of me thinks it would, but I'm not really too familiar with medium res games. Might be worth looking into, or picking one up cheap and trying it. I use mine for RGB modded retro consoles mostly. They support nearly everything.

EDIT: Correction here, I did a bit of research, I don't think they do work with medium res games. I looked around and it generally seems like they dont.

I would use a CRT. Lcds are ok, but make sure your viewing angles are good otherwise you are going to have a completely washed out screen

Just picked up a $5 crt monitor and the color looks great. Can't wait to plug it into the 60 in 1.

thanks!

Finally installed the CRT. This monitor looks fantastic! Great color and deep blacks. If you don't have an arcade monitor, a computer crt monitor is the way to go with the 60in1.

The only way to do 16:9

well it wouldn't be with a 60:1 but with a Xbox 360

Joystick orientation and no cocktail flip would be a huge problem.
