1/4" or 1/8" glass for Asteroids cocktail?

Restoring an Asteroids cabinet. Underlay is on it's way and I'm going to
get a piece of glass cut. The glass cutting place only offers 1/4" or 1/8" - and
I'm pretty sure the original Atari piece was 3/16". I don't want to go out and get
special clips and I certainly don't want to chisel into the wood on the underside
of the top to make 1/4" fit.

My question is - will 1/8" glass be strong enough or durable enough to act
as a cocktail glass top? I don't have kids and nothing would ever even be sitting
on top of the glass other than a cat. When not used the glass will be covered with
a blanket.

Thoughts?

as long as its tempered glass you should be ok.

Same place cut glass for my Donkey Kong cocktail... it is 1/4"
but the clips accommodated that. I know these Atari clips will not accommodate that.
The glass on the Donkey Kong is not tempered, but I honestly don't
think it needs to be. A 1/4" piece of glass is very heavy and durable - unless you're
putting it in a bar setting or having it around kids I suppose.

Has anybody every used 1/8" glass?

...or were you saying because it IS thinner at 1/8" it should be tempered?

I know some people think that you should only use tempered - for all applications.

I only use it because you never know what will happen. I'd rather vacuum up small cubes that deal with shards of glass.

I found a glass company today that has 3/16" glass so I should be good.

Woo hoo!
