Cap kits - Store them or order ad-hoc?

I so need to complete this. I bought a parts organizer. I've accumulated a lot of overflow and have more than once put in an order for something only to later realize I had what I needed already!

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

Nope. All pcb related. Are you saying it's expected until board is powered up? I have a CS pcb that doesn't show as a dead short when powered off. R116 and R117 test ok out of circuit. I pulled the caps too and none are shorted unfortunately. Gonna walk the board with magnifying glass. See...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

I pulled C139 and not the issue. short is still there. For my own curiosity, I pulled the ls244 where right coin switch goes. I thought maybe this chip failed and started the short but it's also testing good out of circuit. Is it whack-a-mole time? Pull the ceramics one by one on the 5v rail?

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

I did not. I just put the multimeter down and sobbed for spell when the short was still there after removing 141. Kind of had to walk away... I will check this one tonight though!

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

Alright, System 2 whisperers, I am gonna prob. need some help here. I thought I had this board in working order but since I put it in the cab, it has been very flaky. Every so often it would boot to garbage and or have no audio. I believe at least the audio in this was due to P15 pins 1-4...

Atari system 2 foam on ground plate

The original black foam completely disintegrated from the metal plate on my SS. I've noticed with the boards screwed in they have decent amount of wobble when the cab is moved which seems suboptimal. Is it as simple as finding something like this of proper depth to replace? I would like the...

Atari POKEY Chips Failing more often these days???

I just did a Super Sprint repair and installed 2 pokeys from my stash of "working" and one of them was dead. I hope the rest of my stash didn't catch whatever that one had.

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

BTW, this was the cab I pulled those boards out of so you can see why they were in such horrible shape lol I'm motivated to start cracking on this project now. I think first step is making sure I can get at least a solid control panel out of the 2 I have. I'll definitely post the other one...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

And after all that, I believe I have a solid PCB set. I also recapped both boards and replaced power headers with square pins. I decided to bling out the eproms since why not. I printed up these with my color label printer. I took pictures of the 2 ROMS I had to burn for the video board and...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

During the audio testing, I found it easiest to just have the game running and coin up so I can keep probing while there is constant audio. At some point along the way I realized free play DIPS were not working. Looking at the schematics, I saw that the DIP at 6/7A is what controls free play...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

At this point, I was super jazzed and went and grabbed the transformer and audio amp and added it to my bench harness. Remember I had fried the YM2151 during the great self dick punch. I swapped in a good Ym2151 and decided to tackle the audio. I actually find audio issues pretty easy to...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

I put the SS VID board back into the mix and I found 1 bad 6116 and 2 bad EPROMS off the bat. After replacing the bad chips, I was able to get the board to boot to test and it would give some RAM 3F error or something very garbled and hard to read. The RAM sockets were all suspect. I noticed...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

I struggled a lot here and was focusing on the watchdog circuit and even tried disabling it. I also would compare to my working CS board and note what signals were doing what. With the watchdog disabled I ended up having a few false positives where the signal would look flaccid on the scope and...

Super Sprint pcb repair from hell

I have a SS project that has been sitting in my garage for years. Every time I look at it my cortisol levels spike! I finally decided to look at the PCBs I pulled when I first got the project and see if they would motivate me to move forward with the project. What follows is a month and...
