Rebuild the original one. most likely the 5v cap.. or regs.. be better than the cheap switchers in the long run. (y)

Use a voltage meter. and check the voltage drop across the harness connectors, with the board fired up. may need to clean the connector pins with De oxit or repin.. at least start there, if there is no voltage drop there, then trace it down line from there.
