    Q*Bert restoration

Finally getting back to this project. The K4900 has a dead blue gun, here's the thread. I don't have a rejuvenator to try to bring it back I rolled the dice and ordered a k4900 off eBay. It was $200 shipped, and actually showed up in working condition. Here it is hooked up to a JROK...

    Taito Qix restore

Thanks again for the nudge, I acquired a Q*Bert project, and my Tempest died, so I'm juggling three restores/fixes right now. I have Qix working. Still no green, and I'm not sure why. Monitor tests fine on my bench. Also no sound, which should be a simpler fix. Here's my latest photo. Not great...

    Crazy Climber (Taito) restore

Finally swapped in a repro control panel and installed the original joysticks I picked up a while back. I still need to rebuild those, but I think I only need to find replacement springs.

    Q*Bert restoration

Yes, looks like New England Coin-Op (used to be based out of Norwood, MA). Here's a link from Mike's Arcade (North American Addresses FAQ from rec.games.video.arcade.collecting in 1997): https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=info&page=FAQ.addresses.txt

    Q*Bert restoration

Thanks for the heads up, ordered! I already pulled the switcher. The power is currently a frankenstein mess, with the non-5v power coming from the linear power supply, and 5v from the (dead) switcher. So I'm going to restore the linear power supply and wire it back up correctly. Unfortunately...

    Q*Bert restoration

Made some progress. I couldn't find the front interlock switch. I thought someone might have removed it, but it was duct taped down (and hidden). I missed it last night when I first got it home. The tape was also keeping the switch pressed in, but the tape loosed over time, and it slid back...

    Q*Bert restoration

The mystery deepens a bit. I did a few more quick checks. The Peter Chou power supply is getting 120v in, and zero volts out on 5v (the 12v, etc, are not connected). It gets 120v regardless of whether the back door interlock switch is open or closed. The on/off switch on the top feels squishy...

    Q*Bert restoration

You (probably) got bingo. I checked the Peter Chou power supply: 120v in, 0 volts out (on the 5 and 12 volt outputs). So it looks like a dead switching power supply. I'll swap another in this weekend and see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

    Q*Bert restoration

Here are the photos in my garage. Looks to be all original, except someone swapped in a Peter Chou switching power supply at some point. The guy I bought it from today had owned it for 20 years (and knows nothing about restoring games), so it was before then. The original linear power supply is...

Anyone know a Rhonda M + Dave H from Maine? Love to hear their life story.

    Q*Bert restoration

My garage is full, so I'm at the "one in, one out" stage of restoring these games, and there's a short list of games I'm willing to swap in. Q*Bert was first on that list. I had one 20 years ago when I knew zero about restoring these games, and it died. I had no idea how to fix it, so I sold it...

    Q*Bert restoration

This was advertised on Craigslist locally for $800 (listed as non-working). @astrosim sent me a heads up, for which I am hugely grateful. I stopped checking Craigslist because it's a ghost town. I got the common Craiglist multi-day silence when I contacted the seller. I had reached out after...

    Taito Qix restore

Thanks! I tried pressing the self test mode button on the video PCB, but I got a "OPEN COIN DOOR TO TEST" error. I did more research, and saw that I needed to jumper the connector at J19 so that the game would start. I did that, and it works!! The green color isn't showing, but I suspect...

    Taito Qix restore

I am finally working on Qix again. I removed the battery and installed the NVRAM replacement mentioned above. The game still boots to the "Memory failure" screen. Not sure what to do next. I am testing the PCBs on my bench with a switching power supply. I plan to run it on the original power...

    Taito Qix restore

Not yet, and thank you for the nudge. I have everything I need. My work/travel schedule has been insane lately, with no letup until the end of the year. I have a solid month in January at home with no travel scheduled. I'm going to clear out a lot of arcade projects then: Qix is first on my list.

    Taito Qix restore

Timely question! I've been delayed by work, etc. I bought the NVRAM module you mentioned. I was planning to test that tomorrow. Assuming that works: I have everything needed to restore the cabinet. I'll start putting everything back together tomorrow.

    Taito Qix restore

Minor update: I removed almost everything from the cabinet, hauled it outside, and gave it a good cleaning. I had a minor heart attack when I cleaned the cabinet with Simple Green and a sponge, and small pimples started swelling afterwards under breaks in the paint. I hauled it back into my...

    Taito Qix restore

Yes, it has the video harness, control panel harness, etc. The quality is fantastic. My "memory failure" video is currently moving slightly from left to right, so let me get the whole thing back together and I can give you a better idea of how well the video works. I'm not sure I have the video...
