    Hard Drivin’ fix up

Nah, you can find one locally. It would have been stupid expensive to get that thing shipped across the country. I’m sure Bob could have packed it well, but you still never know what the freight guys are gonna do to a thing like that. I saw that game. It was a good example, but not too special...

    Hard Drivin’ fix up

Wellllll, about that. What I have is much of an original cabinet center section and little else. There’s no artwork on it, no side pods, and no marquee housing. It’s stuff that another collector (Bob Langelius, who is active here) found and then sold to me. At the time he found it, LCDs weren’t...

    Hard Drivin’ fix up

Agreed. Although while I know to many it would be sacrilegious to do it, I did notice it would be super easy to literally cut the top half of the cabinet off just above the control panel. You would then install a piece of wood as a new top and could put an LCD (of nearly any size!) on it. Would...

    Hard Drivin’ fix up

I don’t have any memory of how or where I picked this thing up. It’s been floating around for at least ten years, though. And it mostly worked when I got it, but the monitor needed a cap kit and likely some other work, so I took all the crap apart you have to on these to get it out. It’s a LOT...

Hard Drivin Compact (Upright) project pickup, love this game

I know about the hate of LCDs in CRT games, but man, I *really* wish a suitably sized 4:3 LCD existed. I’d cut off the top of my compact and replace the mirror with an LCD. —Donnie

    Race Drivin Panorama question

I’d love to have one, but I’m not sure it’s worth shipping from the UK to the US. Good find, though! —Donnie

NEW 3D Printable Arcade Parts (thingiverse)

Small CNC mills and lathes generally lack the mass required to do much in the way of interesting car parts. You really need to go to “mid” size things or greater. I’ve known a lot of people who got started on desktop type mills and lathes and they all regretted even bothering with small machines...

NEW 3D Printable Arcade Parts (thingiverse)

I assume by this you mean a CNC mill. You are not wrong in that they can make MUCH stronger parts, but you are very much wrong about the learning curve. It's WAY longer. Things like cutting tool choices, cutting speeds for different materials, backlash, etc, etc, etc, are all MUCH more...

My 1990 Race Drivin' Cockpit Restoration

That really does look great. I forget how good these cabs look with the marquee up there, though I still plan to actually just put LCDs on mine instead so people can see you play. I may put the marquee on anyway above it since I definitely have high ceilings and room, but I feel like that might...

    Race Drivin Panorama question

Oh yeah, forgot the steering was different, too. Oh well, no RDP in a compact cabinet. I still may try to make a Gonbes work and put an LCD in place of the mirror and cut the top off. I've really got to get down the project list and get that RDP cabinet into my shop and start playing with it...

    Race Drivin Panorama question

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but for some reason I started thinking about this again. Looks like Jed created a board to get proper VGA output from a cockpit HD/RD/RDP. It's here: https://www.pcbway.com/project/shareproject/VGA_Adapter_for_Atari_Hard_Drivin__Race_Drivin__Cockpit.html...

How much cheaper were bootlegs compared to legit pcbs back in the days?

Yeah, there was a time when most operators actually cared about cosmetics of games a lot, so CPOs that were easy to rip up were available and got changed sometimes. What was harder was when you wanted to do a weird conversion (bootleg board or otherwise) and the marquee hole was *bigger* than...

How much cheaper were bootlegs compared to legit pcbs back in the days?

Only the painfully stupid lost money as an operator in the 80’s. You could be moderately stupid and still carve out a living, and if you were smart you great a nice business. I don’t know any operators who grew a business so big they could just hire people to do all the work...each operator...

How much cheaper were bootlegs compared to legit pcbs back in the days?

Yeah, I don’t know of any cases where bootlegs were more than the regular version, but usually they were nearly the same. Rarely were you buying bootleg boards in the pre-JAMMA days, you were buying an entire bootleg game. As to where, it depended...but in most places there was a “big”...

"Ready Player 2" release is in 2 days

Seriously, maybe don’t read a thread about a book you’re in the middle of. I mean just don’t. Stop reading this post if you want zero further info, though I am nice and don’t go very far. I like Wil, but if you think he does a “great job” then all I can say is you haven’t listened to any books...

Rare games you were lucky to see "in the wild"

Oh, and if EDOT is considered that rare, I do own one of those. I’ve only ever seen one, but it was brand new and I got to play a cockpit Firefox. Not a great game, but a very cool concept. —Donnie
