  1. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Thanks for the extra info Ken. Here's the run down on your check list.... 1) All solder points and pins reflowed with fresh solder 2) Burnt header pins and corresponding connectors repaired (can't help that bit of discolored plastic though) 3) Didn't have the big cap handy, and it seems ok...
  2. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

I thought I'd pin up one last picture to close the this saga.... Stargate being played at Plaz's house, but my 3 year old. :) Sorry about the shaky photo, hard to get a good picture in low light. Thanks for the help and patients. Got some more cabinet repair to do, then it's on to my other...
  3. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Got it, R25 is my huckleberry. Thanks Dokert, you're an ace time saver.
  4. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Definitely a Rev B board. Rev B stamped on and matching stitch wires as well. http://www.robotron-2084.co.uk/jpegs/R8731_Rev_B.jpg Here's a picture of my power supply. I'm leaning towards tweaking R10.
  5. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

I'll be redoing the cabinet next. The top and rear panels are water damaged along with the the control panel. I'll have to cut and paint new panels and make a new control panel. Luckily the front, sides (with artwork) and marque are still in great shape. I'm guessing this sat some where under a...
  6. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Replacing the socket for Rom 4 did the trick. They game is booting and waiting for play. But I still need to tweak the power supply up to 5.1 volts to steady the video and eliminate reboots. But I've found a bit of a twist here... So same question, but for different power supply. :) After...
  7. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Oh I also ment to mention one more thing about the Ram and decoders. You recall I was seeing some odd results moving the memory around before. I also noticed a change in the memory code when I moved one decoder but not so with the other. The thought occured tonight that if so many ram sockets...
  8. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Progress being made. I get some music and then diag screens now after the rug test. I'm about convienced that this system was hit by a power surge, maybe even lightening damage. It's not often I see a system with so many TTL parts fried on a PCB with the power supply half cooked also. Normally a...
  9. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

But what if the CPU can't access one of the decoders, or the decoder is giving bad info? Ram sockets and 373's have already been replaced. Thanks for the info on the signals, it makes more sense. Plaz
  10. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Thanks, I'll check that out if I find one of mine bad and I can get a erpom to work as a replacment. Plaz
  11. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Definitely, but then there's 70 more horses in the 360, what to do... Don't have any handy. Since I seem to only mess with old arcades once or twice a year, I don't have extra parts at all. I did find the binary files for the decoders so I should be able to read the originals and compare to...
  12. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Well the 360 was certainly the little brother compared to the 390 and 401, but built right it will do 300+hp. And these days I'm as interested in the gas milage. Some of the racers have gotten 400+ out of a 360. But then you can get 500+ out of a 390/401. :) Plaz
  13. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

One more test... With the decoder at 3G removed, the error code changes to 1-3-1 and remains that way no matter what other ram chips I pull. If pull the decoder from 3C, that familiar 1-1-4 error code returns... but the error code will change to the correct corresponding error code if I pull a...
  14. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

That's great, another Jav/AMX fan. In 68-70 the AMX was a separate two seater version from the Javelin about 12 inches shorter. At a glance they look nearly identical though. In '71 they melded the Javelin/AMX into one model, also known as the "humpsters". They were longer than the 68-70 with...
  15. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

Thanks for confirming. Now I'm off to find some binaries. Plaz
  16. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

You're welcome. :-) I normally prefer restoring old stuff when possible. If this cabinet had been gutted, it probably would have already been sporting a mame configuration weeks ago. Once I saw it pretty much had all the boards and bits, I just couldn't think about messing it up with out...
  17. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

The original labels are in bad shape and have S-T-A-R written accross them in fat marker. No way to read what original codes might have been printed there. It's my guess these might have been reburned from defender to stargate decoders. Do the bins for these exist that I might do a bit...
  18. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

I've got a couple of photos to share, one each of a typicall ram data out and data in on my board. You'll have to excuse my old/slow scope. It tends to round off and attenuate faster signals and some times it's hard to sync in a good spot causing over lapping pulses. Even so, do these look any...
  19. Resurrecting a Stargate/Defender Cabinet

I've tracked and repaired a couple more issues causing bad logic on the data bus and the rug test is looking much better (but not perfect), but now here's the interesting part.... At boot up I get the ram error code 1-1-1. But I know the ram, and socket there are good and signals on all pins...
