You should not need any adapters for standard through hole parallel dip parts. PLCC, smaller serial I/O eeproms or MCUs would be the only thing I can see that require adapters.

Not sure if the internals have changed but the old gg-4x worked reliably with the external power supply for generic eproms. It would not do GALs/PALs but for every day rom replacement it was more than adequate.
