You are correct on the rom swap from 2 player and 3 player. If u find a 3 player board go to hobbyroms.com they should be able to get that for you

In your settings for each machine do you have them designated for unit 1 and the other unit 2

Maybe your couplers are bad. If you want you actually can just go buy a crossover cable and just use the one cable. Plug each end into each computer and ditch the 2 cat5 cables and coupler
