  1. So what did you do to your pins today....

Today I opened up my wife's Twilight Zone pin, replaced the (burnt) idc connectors for the backbox and playfield with crimp-style molex connectors, replaced the yellow bumper switch (#61), replaced the "geneva" switch, and did some minor dusting. Remaining items: Fix lower pop bumper (functions...
  2. TZ Progress

Works great until it's the ceramic that's bouncing back out. I'm wondering if one couldn't put some sort of pad on the inside to lessen the shock...
  3. TZ Progress

OK, found the culprit for the diverter. One of the leads for the coil had come loose. Actually, it looked like it had been wrapped around the connector, and never actually soldered when I found it. I'm wondering if it touching one of the low voltage switches is what caused the entire fiasco...
  4. TZ Progress

Mostly I just need to fine the appropriate sized screws first. I don't like the thought of pieces shifting on the playfield and scuffing/damaging it. I'll try and check that coil tonight. (I'm always just nervous about having it running while doing tests...) It does appear to move freely...
  5. TZ Progress

OK well I'm finally back to working on the TZ pin again: My problem seemed to stem from something backfeeding high voltage into the U20 and in turn U14 chips. I replaced both, but it stopped working once again, so sometime in mid-June I pulled the CPU board back out and socketed U14 (I should...
  6. what is a fresh off route dirty tz worth?

Well, depending upon how much experience you have fixing pins, a TZ might not be the best one to grab off of a route for personal use. I've put over 60 hours into researching/fixing/etc on mine. So far I've replaced U20 (twice), and U14 (twice, socketed the chip 2nd time around). There are...
  7. Twilight Zone power problem

You might also check that the power plug on the back of the cabinet is securely fastened. The plug runs up under the plate, but it's really just a 3 prong plug like you use on a PC. I had mine come loose at one point...
  8. Pins with the deepest rules set

I haven't played TSPP, but I can say that TZ is very nested.
  9. Just got a chance for another pin.....

It took 3 moving men to push my TZ up one flight of stairs.
  10. TZ Troubleshooting Help

Unfortunately after about 20 games, I'm showing a ground short on row 3. Replaced U20 after determining it wasn't a physical switch issue, so... U14 has re-taken a powder. Someone please remind me why I didn't socket that chip while I had the chance? *sigh*
  11. WTB pin in CNY

    Good luck! =)
  12. TZ Troubleshooting Help

Well, today I received the replacement 74LS374 chips in the mail. I had forgotten just exactly how much of a pain in the ass desoldering components was. I knew it was not so fun, but man... Eventually I just resorted to cutting the stupid chip off the board, and clearing the solder out hold...
  13. Stern Lightning Voice Help

Congratulations! At least it sort of worked when you brought it home. I'm going on 2+ months trying to just get my TZ to boot and knock balls around. My brain might be a little fuzzy, but I think the dimming issues (from what I've read) go back to issues w/ components on the driver board...
  14. TZ Troubleshooting Help

Well, we're avid concert goers, and most of the bands we follow tend to go to the same venue. So, we go eat mexican food, walk next door to play pinball and drink, take cab to venue, watch concert, drink water, take cab home, and call it a night. So, it works out. =) Mostly I just want to get...
  15. Terminator 2 advice

http://marvin3m.com/connect/index.htm That should answer your question. =)
  16. Any reason to save old pinball cabinet?

I would say if you've replaced it, and it fell apart on you, just toss it.
  17. Terminator 2 advice

Looks like your standard .156" IDC connector. I think Panduit sells a higher temp version of it now (black) but I don't know the part number. pinrepair.com should have info on how to conver it to a molex style connector should you rather go that route instead. But, it's a little more work and...
  18. TZ Troubleshooting Help

OK, ordered 4 new 74LS374 Chips, so I will try my hand at board repair this weekend. It's been a long time since I've done it. In the meantime I'm working on cleaning/polishing/waxing/staring dumbly at the playfield. Yesterday I swapped out the start button (cracked) with a new one. I...
  19. novus plastic polish

I found the local Harley shop carries it...TAP Plastics does as well, but they're not within walking distance of my job and I wanted to pick some up on the way home.
  20. novus plastic polish

No, you still need to wax the playfield after cleaning. The wax helps prevent wear and tear on the physical playfield, vs Novus which strips the wax and dirt off, while cleaning/buffing/shining. Without the wax, you're pretty much guaranteed to destroy the playfield. Or, at least parts of it...
