  1. Williams Special Chip 2

That is a nasty hack! I redesigned it with a GAL instead: http://www.seanriddle.com/scx.html It also has a disable input so you could use it in an old-school multigame, but I don't think too many people build those any more. If there's demand, someone could whip up a nice little PCB.
  2. Counterfit IC?

A quick follow-up: I ordered some GALs from Jameco and to fill out the order I threw in a couple of 6809Es and a couple of 68B09Es. I tried them in one of my Joust machines and none of them worked. I'm going to let Jameco know about this thread and hit them up for a refund. The 6809Es are...
  3. Counterfit IC?

Darren- I hadn't seen that thread before, but I came across that map merge program a few months ago. I downloaded imagemagick, but wound up just writing some .net code to auto-align the pics. But I need to tweak my matching algorithm to make it work better with large, complex die shots. In...
  4. Counterfit IC?

Darren- That's cool. The most time consuming part of taking die shots for me is stitching the pics. Most panorama software is made for landscapes, and doesn't seem to work well in this application, at least without manually placing lots of control points. I've had some luck with Microsoft...
  5. Counterfit IC?

Nice. It looks a lot like the Atmel 6809 from CPU World, and less like the Hitachi. What did you use to stitch the images? Sean
  6. Counterfit IC?

I didn't notice the original markings either - that explains everything. I wonder if the "re-marker" didn't know there was a difference or just didn't care. Did you find any pics of a 6809E die? I did a quick search, but just found the two 6809s that you posted. Looks like the Visual6502...
  7. Counterfit IC?

:) I'll be happy to photograph it under a microscope if you don't have the equipment. I've added a die shot of a 55516 CVSD chip that was used for speech on many Williams games (including Sinistar), as well as a Special Chip 2 (part of the encapsulation stuck to the die and I haven't spent any...

  9. Robotron CPU board (ram issues?)

If the board worked fine before you removed the socket, and you didn't do anything else to the board, then you most likely have still have a broken trace or maybe a short. You should check continuity between every pin except 2 and 14 of the RAM chip at location 3O and the corresponding pins of...
  10. Pcb id?

Golden Tee? That's cool. I've wanted to get a thermal camera. Which one did you get? Sean
  11. Found a microvision while cleaning

One interesting fact is that the main unit doesn't have a CPU- each cart has its own, either an Intel 8021 or TI TMS-1100. Kevtris has kinda sorta figured out how to dump the TMS-1100, so support for the system is being added to MESS. It's important historically because it was the first...
  12. Sinistar - Where to Start?

There is a sound/speech mixer pot on the speech board that you can adjust. I'm guessing you have volume up pretty high and the mixer set to mostly speech, so the other sounds are quiet. The "c" is correct on the LED for Sinistar; don't know why. Sean
  13. Bad Cats owners - Bad Cats plastics now available from CPR Pinball

If anyone wants to sell me any original plastics after replacing them with new ones, PM me. Thanks- Sean
  14. high speed police light not working (top)

Maybe it's turned off in the adjustments? #37 Police Light On/Off
  15. Yet Another Problem Joust

Yeah, now I see that the yellow in the title is more jagged than it should be, and the light red outline is missing in some places. I think that indicates that the issue is not the Special Chips. I'd suspect the 74166 at 2I or one of the 74LS257s at 2H or 2C, or one of the 7489s at 1B or 2B...
  16. Yet Another Problem Joust

I'd guess one of the Special Chips on the ROM board. They are used to draw text and move graphics around on the screen, but not to draw the Joust logo in attract mode. Hopefully you just need to reseat them. On the title screen, color register 2 is used for "CREDITS", color register 6 is used...
  17. high speed - 3 multiball not working

When I replace batteries (pins or vids), I like to do a full memory clear to make sure no corrupt bits confuse the game. On High Speed, that's adj 68 - clear coins, 69 - clear audits, 70 - install factory. Then go back and set free play, turn off high score reset, etc. It seems odd that a...
  18. joust sound rom?

Sound ROM 9 is Sinistar. It would probably make some sounds, though. The sound board is probably jumpered for a 2516 or 2716 EPROM instead of 2532. http://www.robotron-2084.co.uk/techwilliamshardwareidsound.html
  19. Robotron: What causes this?

Can you always play the first screen? What screen do you see when the game locks up? Does the game run all the way through the attract mode? The colored moving "W"s are a good test of the blitter. No error messages, I guess? Sean
  20. Help with Defender Video Issue - Vertical Lines

The drawing set shows an outline of the boards that labels the RAM chips 11-18, 21-28 and 31-38. RAM 32 is at position 3S, which it looks like is the socket you discovered with the residue. Do you have an ohm meter that checks continuity? All the pins on the RAM chip 3S should be connected to...
