  1. Time to clean out the garage

@KyleF Will be great to get your recollections of PSE recorded. Are there any other former PSE employees still around? I remember seeing a Maneater at the 1999 CAX event right as you walk into the old Playland of the Towne and Country. Would be cool to have a talk with PSE people at CAX and...

  3. Star Rider PCB Repairs

Star Rider ran all weekend long. Once in awhile though I found it dead. After leaving the front off it ran flawklessly so I suspect it got too warm inside the cabinet. I'll probably upgrade the exhaust fan. maybe install a couple additional small internal fans.
  4. California Extreme Update!

Especially for newcomers., make sure you visit the second ballroom of games. There are major attractions there as well. When exiting the main entrance of the main ballroom, make a left, go down to end of hallway and make a right. There is another room of games and vendors.
  5. Star Rider Throttle mechanism

Update on the actual throttle handle. The return spring is one problem, but an even bigger problem is not having a working min/max stop, This throttle spins all the way around. Really hard to play that way. So Jeri is trying making a new throttle handle mechanism. 3D printing and on the spot...
  6. Star Rider Throttle mechanism

After installing the new opto throttle board, it seemed to have good operation, but sometimes three of the four optos would stay stuck on, meaning only 2 speeds with the remaining opto. After much playing around and getting ready to replace the PIA chip, it seemed I was able to get it to...
  7. Star Rider PCB Repairs

Looks like the order of the power supplies coming up is important to the PIA. There is a separate powered switcher in this unit. Plugging in 5V switcher last seems to have solved it. Throttle mechanism now operating correctly.
  8. Star Rider PCB Repairs

I'm not claiming this as my thread, I thought this thread was about Star Rider PCB repair. Hope some of my posts are helpful. And I hope you get your Star Rider up and running. If I can help answer any questions any one else has I will certainly try. I thought that's what forums are for...
  9. Star Rider PCB Repairs

We replaced the 74S37 and 74s161 hot failing chips with some als chips on the EXP board and we are now have stable video. But the throttle is giving some problems. After triggering on of the optos, two other optos no longer register properly. I had to play the game primarily with the turbo...
  10. Star Rider PCB Repairs

There is another problem we are found in that a 1 or more chips on the EXP expansion board start to flake when they get warm or actually hot on a schottky part. he symptom is really noisy lines in the laser video. Freeze spray on those chips corrects it. I stuck a small heat sink on each of...
  11. Star Rider PCB Repairs

Found the main problem, a dead 74ls161 on the VGG board. Didn't have a new one at hand so we took one out of a MITS Altair 8800b
  12. Star Rider Throttle mechanism

Great info, and helpful. Thanks @Mylstar for the new throttle encoder, installing it this afternoon. We won't spend time to get throttle return mechanism working for this weekend.
  13. Star Rider PCB Repairs

OK, was able to get DexterManager to talk to Dexter while it is running in Star Rider. Verified that it is getting the correct Search Frame requests. And we can verify the image skips when a new search is sent. However the Star Rider is not noticing the correct frame number so it fails the frame...
  14. Star Rider PCB Repairs

We've reflowed many of the connectors on my Star Rider game. And we think we found one issue. I was under the impression that the first two laser disc tests just tested the connection from the cpu board to the pif board. We now believe that it also requires the connection from the pif to the...
  15. Star Rider PCB Repairs

latest update. We had one bad contact in the ribbon cable to Dexter. We replaced the idc connector on that but chose not to replace the entire ribbon cable and the hpib looking connector on the other end although I bought the parts. That is a centronics connector. Replaced a dodgy video cable...
  16. Omega Race Cockpit Spinner options

Received an NOS encoder from arcadefixit.com Thanks @Mylstar ! The original one from the game that I cleaned and makes the game playable, has at least one spot where the encoder jumps back and forth. Especially noticeable when trying enter initials in to top score table as the cursor jump back...
  17. Omega Race Cockpit mirror question

Yup, that's exactly what we noticed. We are getting good at installing and removing the black light fixture as we work this out. Also figured out the backdrop sits standing up in the back. It looks great now. Sound is awesome. Glad I had a manual so I can confirm where the backdrop is supposed...
  18. Omega Race Cockpit Spinner options

I took the original encoder home and desoldered it from the interface card. I read the site where one of these was taken apart and cleaned up and got working again. Looked like a lot of work. I noticed there are holes that are big enough to just squirt some deoxit in there. Did that and then...
  19. Star Rider Throttle mechanism

Working on the throttle control for my Star Rider, I see that it doesn't spring back. I'm presuming this is wrong and there must be a return spring missing or broke somewhere. Is it inside the actual handle, or is there something inside the interface area where the optical sensor resides? My...
  20. Star Rider PCB Repairs

I was making progress, but we seem to have gone back to Reset Response failed. We reflowed main connector on PIF, as well as the rom socket. I'm believing that there is no reason to worry about Dexter or the ribbon cable that goes to Dexter until we get 1&2 resolved. Matt has been helping me...
