Solved (I think) - Sinistar Freezes During Title Screen and Gameplay

I likely would be amazed. I've learned that the best way to figure out something is to sample it and get it tested. Of course, that was when I worked for a company who made billions of dollars a year, and when something was a problem, you darn well better be able to tell the manager what the...

Solved (I think) - Sinistar Freezes During Title Screen and Gameplay

That brown material looks biological more than corrosion. Why not rust? Well, no steel in this area. The solder mask is tin, the legs are tin, so no place for rust. Now look at the pattern - it almost looks like mold or some bacterial form, rather than corrosion.

Solved (I think) - Sinistar Freezes During Title Screen and Gameplay

I understand that. I'm trying to understand what caused that effect. It doesn't look like rust to me. It looks more like something took a dump in the area.

Solved (I think) - Sinistar Freezes During Title Screen and Gameplay

Could be a flaky ROM. This was out in 82/83, that's a lot of years and stress on the ROMs.

    What is this part called?

I'd focus on these - remove or lift one leg of the diodes, remove the transistors and check them on a tester. You really can't test this stuff in circuit. This is literally a LRC network. It looks like L503 is the "big lifter" in the Horizontal Size circuit and L504 is the "trimmer" to set...

    What is this part called?

The most probable would be the semiconductors. 2SC2073, 2SD871. They can fail shorted. Inductors generally don't, but can.

    What is this part called?

Measure the resistance across the leads. Use clips - don't hold the meter leads to the inductor leads with your fingers, or you'll read your body resistance. Report back here. 0 ohms would not be good. It should be a low ohm value.

I need help understanding the operation of the video processing circuits on a pacman upright arcade board

The VRA and SBC daughtercards were apparently made when NAMCO couldn't supply enough NVC284 and NVC285 custom chips for all the pacman boards that were being sold. They had the same crappy silver legs that midways masked roms of that ERA did, so they're renowned for losing corroded legs. You...

    grade8arcade's Battlezone - repair & upgrades ( Subwoofer !) log

Oh, and round the sharp edges made the the saw (and the other end which was machine cut) with a file. De-burr the holes with a file or 80 grit sandpaper. Do you know what the original material was? Steel is available too.

    grade8arcade's Battlezone - repair & upgrades ( Subwoofer !) log

It's just a strip of metal. You can get it from Ace Hardware or Lowes or Home Depot - I have a chunk of it in my garage right now. I'd go with aluminum (it isn't an angle, so it's not a structural form) and just buy what I need, cut it with a hack saw, and drill it out.

    Anyone use these cheap testers?

Nope, I got my stuff from others. I don't trust the stuff coming out of China. Much like their parts they sell, it tends to be dicey.

Afterburner upright - randomly cuts off & freezes

For the fuse, did it have a black cap on the fuse? If it did, look at the cap - it should have two ears on the metal part the fuse end goes into. If they are knocked down, you can use needle nose pliers to bring them out again.
