    CRT Repair Advice

It does take years. I started learning electronics repair on old Nintendos and game cartridges probably ten years ago, and slowly figured out the basics, got bored then moved on to arcades and CRT repair about 6 years ago and it definitely took several years just to gain a minimum basic...

    Frogger - just started troubleshooting.

I've had to deal with the aftermath of one pest infestation or another in nearly every cab I've had, but I always buy trashed projects to save them. I bleach everything inside and scrub it completely down when I know something's been nesting in a cab, always happy with the results but there's...

    Frogger - just started troubleshooting.

Everything looks good to me, those extra plugs at the bottom can be ignored, they don't go anywhere. The only power on/off switch is the interlock switch at the back door. White post in the middle left, where the open metal box is. Just pull it out to turn on and push back in to turn off. Or...

    Frogger colors question

Backstory-- I bought a rough project Frogger from a local collector a month ago-- had a rolling screen that couldn't be adjusted, game would boot but seemed to glitch and wasn't playable, had no sound, joystick wasn't wired up, had plenty of work to do to straighten things out. Recapped the...

    Scored a free GORF project

Update: project was shelved for a few months but just got back to it, bought a Happ power supply plus adapter to replace the original PS that blew up during testing, also during the downtime I recapped and reflowed the boards and added a heat sink to the data custom. Found tons of cold solder...

Gorf test mode and power supply questions

Trying to bring a Gorf to life, keep having to buy parts. It blew a black tantalum capacitor so I replaced all of those, cleaned all chips and checked all contacts, reflowed headers, etc. Haven't rebuilt any part of the power supply, but checked voltages and it looked like they were regulated...

Yep someone already hacked a hole in the back under the lower door and added a fan. Thanks for the info!

I see identical stock NOS black tantalums online, would this make more sense for the application or do I need to just stay away from them altogether? Just not quite understanding the theory behind which cap to choose in this situation and why.

Sure enough, already blew one of the tantalum caps on a ram board. I'll replace them all and see if it comes back to life, but I'll need to get the parts first. I see people just switch them out with regular 22uf axial electrolytics? Or is it better or more correct to source proper tantalum...

Craigslist, couldn't believe they messaged me back, I dropped everything and ran out the door. Thanks for that video, I've been doing a lot of reading this evening, getting acquainted with the common issues and info that's out there in other threads.

No sound at all when I tested it, but I'll look into that later, haven't looked up a manual yet, barely sure if I even found the volume knob or not!

I think the problem was just that bent leg, I brushed every board off and reseated that chip and it actually works! No sound yet though, not yet sure why, that's next.

Pulled the first board from the cage and dry brushed the dust off, looks like someone even more amateur than me has been here, the contacts are all heavily sanded around the edges of the boards and I see a lot of mistakes/mysteries, and a lot of bad solder joints. Does anyone know why the...

    Scored a free GORF project

I got lucky and picked up a free GORF today, nearly complete, looks unhacked, missing only the monitor glass bezel, game didn't boot on initial test. Has a G07 monitor with no burn in, it comes to life but looks out of sync or has a lot of garbage on screen, squealed a lot, game PCBs seem to not...

Zaxxon plays blind w/ screen issues, see pic

The spark gap wasn't the sole issue at all, there is still a short somewhere else. At this point I've gotten lost checking for continuity on all sorts of questionable parts and have decided to switch out a few other beeping diodes and resistors I'm finding. Some of the components I haven't...

Zaxxon plays blind w/ screen issues, see pic

Ok I found on the neckboard a certain SG4 with continuity between the leads and I think it's my culprit. None of the other spark gaps have continuity like this one. It looks like a ceramic capacitor and says 1kv on it but these spark gap components are not listed in the monitor parts list, when...

With power on it looked like the ohms registered in the negatives, -10 to -13 but jumping around. But then I tried with power off and got .9 ohm one way and 1.2 ohm when I reversed my leads, so yeah about 1 ohm with power off.
