Mr. Do! was in fact designed as a "Dig Dug" imitator, but the changes made were a definite improvement. It's faster, deeper, and higher scoring. But both games are great.
I don't believe Universal had a manufacturing plant in the States or elsewhere (just sales offices), so all their games were either imported or licenced to other companies.
Mr. Do!
The moment when you realize the real weapons in the game are the apples, not your power ball. The ball is there as a last resort (hence why it takes longer to re-spawn the more you use it).
If you are digging through the maze with 1 or 2 monsters trailing immediately behind you, they usually will change into diggers, giving you some breathing room. If you're not digging, this tactic does NOT work and they'll simply knock you out.
The first version did not have the "munch monsters" in the game at that point. At some point (I'm guessing when they decided to licence the game out), they changed the BGM (anybody know the name of the song that plays in the prototype?), how the Alpha Monster behaves and added the bodyguards...
I always found it hilarious with Universal games having artwork like this...
Then had gameplay that looked like.... this...
I would say that Ueda got it right with Lady Bug (a bug eating flowers in a garden avoiding other beetles trying to eat her), but then Mr. Do! happened(a snowman/clown...
Correct. Apparently Patrick decided to make his own version of what he thought the game would be. If you look at the graphics however, the scores and letters don't look anything like the font that Universal used BITD, and furthermore I don't think they could've pulled off that explosion...
The version that was released in 2017 was a fan-made edition of the game as the description on the FB page says. I often thought the 2017 version had too advanced graphics for the era it came from, but the original arcade version seems more appropriate for the time.
