My point is that it might work outside it's intended purpose, but we don't even have the hardware to try it if we were interested.

What most of us here want is the ability to play multiple games on our VS. Arcade cabinets. That's what this project is tailored to. Whether it can boost the hardware if an NES is irrelevant to most of us here. I do think there is other hardware out there that will do what you want, but I can't...
I just finished repairing a wrestlefest, and since info on the net is scarce, here's what I did for a bad ic1:
Replace IC1 with a 27C400, with the ROM file doubled to fit. If using a tl866 (minipro) eprom programmer, you will need an adapter, such as the one offered by digicoolthings.com ...
Answering my own question: 27C400, with the ROM file doubled to fit. If using a tl866 (minipro) eprom programmer, you will need an adapter, such as the one offered by digicoolthings.com . Select 27C4096 and change programming voltage to 12.5v .
At first, I got red pin stripes. Then they widened to what you see, and then they merged into an all red BG.
