got a panavise 324 for $15 when radioshack was clearing them out. one of the best tool purchases i've ever made in this hobby! you definitely need to buy a longer arm for it to make it maximally useful though. they come in all different lengths and are pretty cheap.

the shafts of the stick get worn, and the housing it mates with gets worn as well. i don't have a picture of the housing, but the shaft is supposed to fit into a round hole. they get worn into an elongated pill shape over time. the picture of the shaft shows a groove worn into the shaft that...

nope, no need to remove whole monitor, you've got it. be sure to reflow the solder on those header pins while you have the board out. i also like to remove the two big cement resistors and solder a piece of heavy gauge wire in their place, but that's up to you.

you didn't mention the low data byte error before. bad bit slicer and/or socket(s). have someone watch the picture while you reach thru the coindoor and press on the bit slicers. if your missing images return, i'd guess bad socket.
