If the top speed does not reach the maximum allowed for the setting, you may need to hold the gas pedal UP when powering on the game.
The “zero” position on the gas pedal pot is initialized when the game is powered up.
PP1 and PP2 are very different games.
PP1 is about reaching and maintaining the highest speed, only slowing down slightly as needed in the first turn, and skidding through the Centipede Turn.
As far as top speed goes, the player is expected to drive between the other cars at top speed.
PP2...
Make sure she drives with two hands!
And, that the game is on the proper settings of practice "C" and race "G" :)
It would be a shame to invest time in to playing the game at max speed of 195mph or 225mph.
Just to give you some idea of the challenge ahead.
While a score of 66,000 puts you in the top ten all-time, and is less than 2% from the current high score, it is quite the mountain to climb to reach 67,000.
You would have to reduce all four lap times by an average of an entire second each...
For Pole Position 2, remember to move the shifter repeatedly from Low to High, to continue up-shifting. There are more than two gears in the sequel, but the controls remained from the original.
I remember playing Gravitar when it was on Field Test. The game was much less difficult, and way more fun. Atari probably had to crank up the difficulty to reach the required quarter drop to justify manufacturing the game. Maybe those ROMS are available for comparison, Scott Evans possibly?
Yea, San Jose :)
Unlike PP1, the PP2 score was not pushed to the limit, so we don't know how far it is to climb to the top of this mountain :)
Great Job on the score!
Yep, it's ironic that you must drive off the road to keep the speed under control.
PP2 is much more "don't crash", rather than...
Although it is a sequel, PP2 is a very different game.
PP1 is about keeping up your top speed, and subtle, precise adjustments to the steering while passing cars that are near your current speed.
PP2 is about increasing and decreasing your speed dramatically, often hitting the brakes or...
There is only one dip-switch setting that will allow for the world record score to be attained, so there should be no reason to discuss possible dip-switch settings as a factor in a high score for Pole Position.
