i can crank it up and the voltage goes up ... down and it bottoms out @ 5.4v. i will measure across it and see what its range is. looks to be a 1k ohm trimpot thanx, paul

thanx elutz and dokert ... the x-y adjustments did the trick. Y is vertical ... x is horizontal. i had not noticed i was stretched horizontally also. on the 5.4v subject. i got the A/R board up and running by installing a new 2N3055. I could not find a 26k 15v blue cap so i used a 28k 30v one...
