That brown stuff was adhesive to keep the capacitors in place so that they don't wobble during transport and break their leads. This is done on the big caps since they have a lot of mass.
Fyi, I didn't know this either and went through the same thought process that it seems you are.. and when I...
Welcome!
As an fyi, this site also has local forums. You have to have set your city in the main klov web site to get access to them though. I didn’t know this for many months.
The reason I bring this up, is that you can do a search there. I remember seeing posts about some guy in Vallejo that...
Did my first ever monitor "repair."
Did some work on my Multi-Williams... the red signal was dropping, but would come back if the cabinet was moved (or bumped on the side, Fonzy style). I had previously reseated the connector, but it didn't help. I pulled the chassis and reflowed the pins on...
You seem to be stating, and contradicting the earlier advice in this thread, to keep the isolation transformer floating for the same reason that the eevblog video is saying. Am I understating you correctly?
And if so, is there any condition or use case to have the isolation transformer grounded...
I have seen a bunch of videos like that too. I think they are targeting different use cases for issolation than is used for monitors, maybe... (To be honest, I'm not sure why you need to have an isolated supply for the monitor)
But.. the use case in the videos I have seen that advocate removing...
+1
This shit is hard and setbacks are part of the process with something of this complexity. I admire your grit. And as ArcadeTechGW said, you clearly have the knowledge and skills. Hang in there :)
Ah, ok.. the comments are what made me think it was part of something larger. (There is a disassembly out there that I saw once, but now can't quickly find again.)
I saw the one I was thinking of again. It's not in an original cab though: https://ventura.craigslist.org/vgm/d/simi-valley-black-widow-arcade-video/7796617845.html
All of this... and this might be obvious from the above, but you can also use the soldering iron and a heat gun/hot-air at the same time. I sometimes do that with a soldering iron, but when desoldering through hole parts, I'll turn the board sideways and use desoldering gun on one side and the...
Wait. what? I only have one, and it's grounded, but what's the issue if one isn't? And whatever the issue is, is it only an issue if they are on the same power circuit? What if one is floating/battery powered?
