Many thanks to everyone. I have bought my can of freeze spray, and if it is the PIA chip, I suspect the easiest solution will be to buy an interface board and see if it sorts the problem out, as I am not sure I am yet ready to to buy a logicprobe or inflict my soldering skills on my beloved...
I have removed the interface board, checked the contacts and put back but no luck.
All chips on the interface board cool.
The only chips that appear warm are the main Microprocessor on the CPU Board (6809E), and the bank of RAM chips. Is this normal?

- it would make a lot of sense if it was the control interface board - I'll certainly try that first.
In the meantime if anyone else has encountered similar problems or has additional ideas all comments gratefully received.
