I just picked one of these up and as usual there was no manual with it. Does anyone know anything about them such as where to get parts for them?
The wires to the smoke unit were cut so I am assuming that it is bad. Thanks Rich |

We have got one on the route, neat machine! Picked it up from Namco, used, last year. No manual for mine either, but I figured most everything out when I shopped it.
The smoke wasn't working in ours either, turns out the whole system was just plugged up. I disasembled it, cleaned the valve and nozzle and replaced the hoses. The juice tank was very badly rusted inside, I suspect the rust is what plugged the works. I replaced the tank with a small plastic fuel tank used for gas powered remote control boats/cars. For smoke juice I'm just running standard fog fluid, available at DJ/theater/sound and lighting suppliers. Don't know how much help Betson would be. The company that made that machine wasn't a big coin-op company and they are since long gone. Parts are generally hard to find. Belts for the handles, lights and light lenses are standard stuff, but beyond that most everything is custom made. Handle motors are VERY hard to source (they were custom built for this machine) and very expensive if you can find one. Last quote I got was $350 for a used one! Clive at http://webpages.charter.net/coinopcauldron/Index.html does board repairs on these. Clive is a great guy and does top-notch work. He also occasionally has used parts available. Good luck with that machine, it's a cool piece. D |

Thanks for the replies, I picked mine up from Namco also.
The smoke unit appears to be all there but what appears to be the smoke element is rather burnt looking. I may try hooking it back up and try some fog juice. The one thing that is missing is the bulb that is in Fester's mouth. I mistakenly thought it was a real bulb that was there. Can you tell me what the bulb is or how it connects to the clear plastic tube? Thanks Rich |

The smoke nozzle will probably look burnt as it is a heating element and does get quite hot during normal use. It's possible there's a problem with it, but in general, heating elements like that are quite robust by nature.
When you start work on the smoke, the operational sequence is: Game start, heating element energized and servo driven to open valve. This generates the smoke and fills the head with smoke. The fan doesn't run until the player reaches the end of the game at which point the fan is turned on and blows the smoke from inside the head out the ears. The light bulb lamp on mine was simply slid down inside the tube from behind (have to remove the very upper back panel). I just pulled it up the tube by the wires, replaced the bulb and slid it all the way down and back in. dunno if that's the way it's supposed to be, but that's how mine is. I forget the actual bulb number, but I used the same bulb as the blue and red lights on the front and it worked fine. D |

Thanks, knowing how the smoke is supposed to work is a big help. I was wondering how it could make smoke instantly.
I have the bulb that lights up. I'm missing the fake bulb that you see in Fester's mouth. I don't see how it would attach to the clear plastic part. |

I suppose you could rewire the fan so it starts blowing the smoke out at game start, but there wouldn't be much smoke. The nozzle is pretty small and the whole system just doesn't make alot of smoke overall. I think that's why it's setup to fill, or charge, the head first, then turn the fan on and blow it out all at once in one cloud. To run it steady in game mode, you'd have to get more volume out of it, but I doubt the existing heating element could keep up with any modifications that increased fluid volume. Quote:
Ohh.. I see... Mine has the fake bulb as one piece with the plastic tube, it doesn't come off the tube, at least not that I can see. Sounds like your's may be snapped off ? D Last edited by D_Zoot; 04-20-2009 at 02:54 PM. |
