I've been working on a redesign of the wico xy pattern generator via the vectorlist.

If you’re interested in the re-capture of Dave’s Wico Schematics; I’ve temporarily posted them there:
http://Pinball-Mods.com/blogs/wp-con.../XYPattern.pdf

Still to-do:
1) Determine 7493 wiring vs Dave’s schematics.
2) Front Panel board integration – pending Switch Decode.
3) Simulate Opamps for circuit understanding.
4) Power Supply: pending power measurements – if someone will volunteer to get them.
5) PCB Layout.
6) BOM Generation.

Changes w/regards to Dave’s schematics:
A) Decoupling caps for each IC.
B) 0ohm “202 solder shorts” for unconnected pins of TTL gates at U2, U3, U5, and the “top” of R30 (R3). So they can be reversed if necessary.
C) Passives are likely to have different RefDez.
D) IC Power Supply pins are shown at decoupling grid.
E) “Bussed” Address pins.
F) Unused Gates are “strapped” to a known state.
G) 74xx TTL logic is becoming obsolete. Plan to use 74HC logic or 74LS logic – haven’t decided.

My plan is to have the board manufactured by batchpcb.com as a dual sided board.
Surface Mount ( yes; I can hear the screams of horror ) as I want to minimize PCB size – thereby cost.

I’d appreciate any “peer reviews” of the schematic page.

I'm curious as to what your redesign of the X-Y board will accomplish. Make the game video output more reliable and stable? Increase the ability of the game to handle re-drawing the vectors at a faster rate? In which case..wouldn't the monitor itself be a limiting factor?

It's a piece of test equipment to help troubleshoot / fine tune your monitor. Especially with vector games, if something is wrong it's helpful to narrow it down to the monitor or the game board. This will take the place of the game board and send a static, generic image to the monitor so you can see if it's working, and so you have a useful pattern for making quality adjustments. Does not enhance or take the place of any game boards.

ah ok. I was hoping someone would come up with a way for the game to run smoother on the higher levels. Mine gets bogged down and slow the more ships that are on the screen.

So...is this restoration over? Are we starting a new topic?

Good point; I guess I did kinda derail my own thead.
No the restoration is no over...
... I'm working on the XY generator to help fix my convergance problem. The Generator is going to be batch submitted with two other PCBs for the rear top window mod.

I still need to resurect the debug of the PSU design.... and come up with a freeplay option.

So; nope - still working almost exclusively on this mod.

Redesign the XY pattern generator just to help converge the monitor?

That seems over the top.

You know, the Atari series of vector games had some pretty tight patterns to help converge the 6100. How about an adapter to plug WG6100 signal levels into a G08? That would be pretty jam-up.

Or how about custom-program some good convergence screens into a format for the G80 cage that we could burn to EPROM?

Lower level tech I guess.
I always have loved looking at the Wico XY generator schematics. Before this recent hoopla on the vectorlist, I didn't know that they were NOT from the manufacturer.

This would be a nice addition for anyone with a G08 or a WG6100.

Go for it.

No other vector games here. so; not really an option.

Thought about that. I have nearly zero understanding of the internal G80 architecture... so would have to figure a lot out just to burn an eeprom.

Yeah - I kinda walked into a surprise there. I thought they were from the mfr too...

It really is an interesting design... That clocking the box/cross function is really elegant.
I think the xygen would be a great asset to the vector community; but the copy ownership thing might get in the way of that.

I haven't generated a bom... but most of the ICs are under a buck.. I'm hoping the bom will be under 20 and the pcbs under 30. we'll have to see once I get the layout done.

Beside being a software nerd; a chance to keep my EE skills "up to date" is a welcome derivative.

I'm working on a PWM Fan controller for the Monitor side; but I'm STILL waiting on Si from Maxim-ic.com

Yeah; I thought a bright overhead flashing would be more than a little anoying during gameplay.
I'd be interested in the flashing boards, assembled or not ,how much $$ Zip 93257
