I've had some requests to increase the size of the avatars from 80x80 to 100x100. At first it seemed like a good idea. As I think about it I'm not so sure.

Making avatars larger makes people have to scroll down more and more to read messages.

As an alternate idea...there are 'profile pictures' turned on in the system. When you look at someones public profile you can see them (if someone has uploaded one, which nearly no one has yet.). The limit on these photos is 100x100.

I'm inclined to increase profile picture limits to 150x150 max size, and to leave the avatars at 80x80 (I currently have a 100x100 avatar and 100x100 profile. If you click on my name you can see the profile pic).

Comments?

While personally I do not mind the large avatars in the least, I think others have a point that some can be objectionable to work/kids, so either the size should be reduced or a content criteria (which might be difficult to police).

How are we doing on the animated avatars? Still can't get them to work. Thanks.

I vote (I know, it's not really a poll) that the avatars be at a minimum 100x100 and agree with mclemore to allow animated gifs. :) 80x80 is just too damn small.

And yeah, the super-huge-giganto avatars are annoying, and people are still posting without editing their avatar, which is pretty lame.

Actually, your current avatar is 80x100. ;)

Yes.

I don't mind the 80x80 size, but I do mind the 19.5k limit. I have a couple nice avatars in the 80x80 format that are 30-40k. The old software used to just automatically scale down the uploaded pic if it was larger than the required size...

Yeah, your av works. I took my old one down messin' around after the transition. I can get it to load, but no animation.

Actually, I wasn't voting for 100x100. I was voting for 80x80 with larger photos limited to the profile page. I'm getting other people sending me msgs about their thoughts on avatars sizes, and simply put, there isn't a consensus opinion as far as I can tell.

As far as animated avatars. The feature is turned on. If it isn't working it is because of the image resizer might be killing it. I'm going to turn on a 'deluxe' resizer in the next few days, we can see if that makes a difference. Existing animated avatars would work fine regardless.

I vote for the 80x80 since the avatars are displayed on top of the message (tired of scrolling so much). I also vote for larger avatar file sizes.

Seriously? Tired of scrolling so much? Wow we Americans are a lazy bunch! "Im tired of moving my index finger so many times."

I like the bigger avatars. I dont like the huge 1500x1500 size ive noticed some have. We all know what opinions are like, so it would have been nice if ths size was limited right at transition so no-one would have known the difference. I think 80x80 is too small.

Yea, I am serious. I'm growing tired of these damn avatars that take up half the page.

I agree here. While using the computer at the B&B, a certain large avatar came up and the innkeeper was right behind me and was mortified that I was looking at such a site on his computer...!! At an airport computer terminal I tried to bring up a post and it shut me down as being objectionable, and would not allow me access.

While most avatars are currently much more decent than they were several months ago, I do like the 100X100 size, and wonder if people want to have big pictures if they could put them on their profile page. Just a thought. I am not personally offended by any of them, but some people may find certain content to be.

Moderators have powers now, right? Moderators also know the 2-3 people that STILL have huge avatars (one reefer related one is intentional, I would be on it).

So....would an active moderator just nip the 2-3 trouble avatars in the bud and resize/remove them? Jeesh!

It makes me feel like a big man. I am getting tired of it though.

I have a question. Has anyone tried a test to see how much more scrolling is needed on a page if avatars are 80x80 vs. 100x100? I would if we had a test section or I knew where it was.

Heres 100x100 vs 80x80

I dont think its that much. Youd have to move the mouse wheel a couple more times per page. I would like to see it about 120x120. I still think 100 is too small, but 150 is pushing too big. Or get rid of them all together, then no one will complain about avatar sizes!

I have a stylish script that will resize avatars (and all inline images) to 100x100. If anyone uses stylish in Firefox, I'll send it to you.

We will deal with avatars later this week. 100x100 works great for many, though I've gotten a lot of pm requests for 80x80... especially from people browsing at work. Profile pictures can be made bigger (currently 100x100, but we can set them at 120x120 or 150x150). Jury is still out.

Once somethign is set this week everyone will have a few days to fix their oversized avatars before we deal with them.

I posted a profile pic, but it's looks so small that I had a request for a larger one just so they could see what I look like. perhaps larger profile pics are okay, considering you only see them when viewing the profile....

The scroll thing would be as much of an issue if the title/avatar bar was aligned to the left of the screen like every other forum on the 'innernets'.

Not as much. The text of this message would be even with the avatar and the location, post total, etc just like the old forum. That would mean that posts would be closer together, and flow easier.

I'm just a bit bummed that it no longer shows WHO I'm replying to if I use the quick reply and don't want to quote....

Well, most people don't bother putting anything next to the little page icon... I suppose you could indicate who you're talking to that way.

You have to bypass the quick reply option to do it, though.

You mean except for other vBulletin forums? Which there are MANY. Although there are skins/themes that could be used to do this very thing (much like the Neo forums). Here's hoping that we'll have some alternatives someday.

You know what was even more awesomer back before you started posting here? This forum and the last one both use a "favorite" or "subscription" method of sending emails to you if a new post is posted in a thread that you have marked as such. But the OLD-old forum actually let you set it up so that you'd only get emails if someone actually hit the reply button on your post. So yeah, you might not see the reply if someone was replying to you and pressed a reply button on another post, but it sort of encouraged people to actually use the reply function in the proper way.

We have not made a final decision about avatar sizes (80x80 or 100x100) and we are still getting familiar with this system (as time permits), but for the time being, all the super-large avatars should be shrunk back down to 100x100....

Maybe this is dumb, but instead of worrying about which avatar size to go with, can you make it a user decision? So, in the user CP, they can select the max avatar size?

Personally, I don't care, since I turned Av's & sigs off. If we get the format to the username/av/stats on the left with the message on the right, then the av size might be turned back on, at which point I may care....

FYI, in regards to avatars on the left hand side which most people seem to prefer. I found this:

I don't know if this relates to the specific version that KLOV is using but I thought I would put it out there.
