I accuired a star trek cockpit game a few weeks ago. I wanted it to look new, mint condition, and to look like it did once before a long time ago. So I decided to do a complete overhaul of it starting with the chair. I am new to this and this is the first of anything for me to do of this sort. Take a look and let me know what yoiu guys think so far.
Started with:

Finally, seat box and base done with trim.

Thats it for now. Waiting for slot cutter for the t-molding, cant put it all together until slots are cut, then chair will be assembled. Will keep you guys updated. Thanks for looking.......

The GO8 is working. The plastic pieces? Well have an idea what I am going to do, not sure yet, let you know when it happens and see how it turns out. As far as the boards? I think a chip took a dump on me, have a couple of experts working on it for me

Looking good. Don't you think it's going to look weird when you mate the peices back together with your edge moulding going all the way around? I'm in the middle of doing my star trek cockpit as well and i find it funny that it looks like we used the exact same vinyl as a replacement. http://forums.lymphoma.com/forums.arcade-museum.com/images/ubbgraemlins/grin.gif
I painted the plastic bits with that krylon fusion plastic paint. they came out fairly well. Only thing i would've done different is sand a bit more between coats. I'll post some pics of mine when i get home tonight.

Glad to here the G08 is working. I hope your "experts" find the problem. Finding a working boardset is I chore I wish on no one. When the project is complete I advise not to leave it running hrs. on end. We are talking about a Sega vector so I wish you the best of luck.

It might look funny, but until I get the other side done
I LL have to wait and see. Might have to take it off, or make an adjustment at that time, no problem to do it.
I didn't use vinyl on my base. I used very thin carpet. Did you do a complete rebuild?

Is it that hard to have a working boardset for this game or even to find working?

Is it that hard to have a working boardset for this game or even to find working?
YES! I can not stress enough how fragile Sega Vectors are. A few shops across the country have boardsets here and there but usually have no G08 to test. That is the problem I ran into when I was building mine. I was fortunate to have an excellent repair man in the area. It took a while but in the end he got it going. Big shout out to LONGSHOT for sending me his spare sets...It would not have come together w/out him.

Nice work so far. Anyone want to take bets on how long that big empty space stays empty? I see more cabinets in the future!
What's the plan for the shell and getting the faded drab out of it? Paint? Can those be cleaned somehow?

Looking forward to seeing how this turns out, great work so far!
If you're wondering how to clean up the chair itself, maybe hit up the guys over at the arcadeotaku.com forum? A lot of focus on Japanese candy cabs over there, so I'm guessing there will be a decent amount of experience with that sort of material.

I've also been told that getting it re-enameled by one of those shops that specialize in "re-doing" your tub, might be an option. Not sure what the process is or what it involves, but as long as there isn't any heat, it might look nice.

I would think any spray paint like fusion might give it the rough texture that a spray paint can leaves, maybe not, I dont know.

That does look awesome. What fusion did you use?? Also, how did you go about painting it? sand first, spray, sand again? does it have a smooth finish to it?
robxf
12-05-2008, 06:44 PM
I'll have to go out to the shop and take a look at which fusion it was...I treated it like body work..paint..wet sand...paint...wet sand...paint. The finish is not quite as smooth as i imagine it once was. Maybe a clear coat of some kind?? If i find one that i think will work i might give that a try. Mine wasn't as ground up as your appears to be, but it looks much better than it started out just the same.
I woulda tried white Vinyl dye (http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/modding/46) which can be purchased at most automotive stores like pepboyz.
The dye actually bonds with the surface. Basically; it doesn't put a layer on top. Usually you don't have to worry about paint running; or it changing the surface texture.
Use it all the time on my CaseMods (http://www.austinmodders.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=17873#17873) when painting beige panels on CDROM drives or whatever.
Little late for you; but maybe it'll help someone else.

That looks pretty damn good. However, I do have a question for ya. Is the wood that bad or are you just going for the minty fresh look? It seems like you are putting a lot of work in to it. It will surely be a keeper when you are done.

I caught santa playing 1 of the videos games in the basement. As far as the restore, I am re-doing it becasue the chair, monitor side, the white(wood)pieces, and the plastic trim, the overall look needed to be restored. The plastic pieces where faded to yellow, and the white(wood) pieces where scratch, chipped, and faded. So, yes going for the minty look.

that looks really good Rob,I really don't want to do a major rebuild on mine, my Star Trek CP plays good but it all yellowed and needs major cosmetic work. The only concern is the sticker side art. any ideas what you are going to do about that? <font color="green"> [/color]

Here's another update : I just finished both plastic side pieces for the chair. I coated them using a tub and tile re-finishing kit. It gives your bath tub or tile that new porcelain look. I rolled 2 coats on, came out almost perfect, sanded down now with 600, now for the final coat.I will post another picture when final coat is dry. This stuff really sticks, me and the wife had a good buzz going last night in the basement, even though the windows were open and fans going.

Ok, here's the last update for now: Side pieces painted, and came out awesome!!To give you an idea of the paint, look at your bath tub finish and thats whats on those sides, that type of finshed. Both pieces bolted back on, and black trim molding added on. Ran out of the trim molding so have to order more for other side, but you can see how it turned out from being built from scratch to the now finished product. Things left:: another roll of trim molding,
replace plexi glass on back, and back art on chair. Minor stuff.

Thanks guys. You can see in the one picture showing the chair next to the other unit(monitor) what it was in color to now the new look. Once Christmas is over, I will be doing a restore on the monitor side.Once I am done, it will be a complete restore back to original condition. Well, I guess it will be close to original now since I re-made everything.Question for anyone?? Is this still considered original since I started with all original cockpit?

My cockpit has all 3x artwork pieces MINT. I however do not have a scanner! http://forums.lymphoma.com/forums.arcade-museum.com/images/ubbgraemlins/tongue.gif Nice job on the cab BTW, looking great! I was going to take the sides off of mine and repaint them white. I was going to cover the artwork on the sides and mask about a 1/4" around it, so it will have a skinny yellow frame around the artwork but I'd prefer that over messing up a beautiful artwork set.
knight rider
12-16-2008, 03:02 PM
How do you scan the artwork? You would have to have a big portable scanner correct? I asking because I dont know how or ever seen it done. Can I take a picture of it? will that work? then take it somewhere
horseboy
12-16-2008, 03:04 PM
Make multiple scans and patch them together with the computer.
FullThrottle
12-16-2008, 03:05 PM
You take the lid off a normal scanner. Put something like a 2x4 along the bottom of the art and clamp it to the cabinet. You do the wood for a support to keep it stable, level, and make it easy so when you do multiple sections they all line up perfectly when stitched back together.
tester007
12-16-2008, 03:05 PM
Is that the natural original color of the plastic or did it yellow over time? The artwork still looks white so guessing its not cig smoke..
FullThrottle
12-16-2008, 03:07 PM
It yellows due to time... just like some old Nintendo's and SNES's... it has to do with the type of plastic used, and sunlight exposure. Where the T-molding was on mine is nearly perfect white where an inch to the left which was exposed all those years is yellow.
knight rider
12-16-2008, 03:09 PM
Mine was the same way. When I took them off, the inside was white, and there was like a 1/16 -1/8 of white under the t-molding also. After that, all yellow

12-16-2008, 03:12 PM
I will have to put a post up on here if anyone has a cockpit version and the art work is mint condition and has a scanner that they could scan for me. I just looked at mine, and its not good, torn in alot of places.

It's cold outside! Or I'd be restoring.
Now where have I seen information about masking artwork, hmmmm? No need to leave a boarder on it FT, just mask and trim with an exacto for a clean edge finish.
mask your artwork (http://www.tokensonly.com/2008/09/restorations/vectorbeam-space-war-restoration-part-ii/)
Now for the scanning, if you have a nice HP window scanner, its a piece of cake. You can even see what you're scanning.
scanner about half way down page (http://www.tokensonly.com/2008/10/restorations/vectorbeam-space-war-restoration-part-iii/)
Let me know if you want to borrow the scanner John, we'll save that artwork. Nice job on the resto.

LOL, I don't have the balls to try that one like pictured... Even with the lowest tack tape I'd be worried that when I pulled it up I'd be destroying a PERFECT piece of art. I do too much car painting that makes me paranoid, let alone a fragile piece of art. I'd prefer to live with the yellowed border and know my art is how it was when I started my project. Maybe I'll experiment, but paranoid is an understatement!
