Hey guys,
I had this site up for a few years but I lost my domain (gunbu.com) so I just put it up again today. At the time of the restoration I was living in Florida with my parents and had a nice big garage to work in. Now Im in California in an apartment so I don't think I'll be repainting cabinets anytime soon.
Well, hope you guys enjoy!

Very nice! Restorations like that make me wish I had more talent with woodworking. Amazing difference from what you hauled home! http://forums.lymphoma.com/forums.arcade-museum.com/images/ubbgraemlins/cool.gif

Glad you got the site back up. I was looking for it a while back, but was unable to find it (for obvious reasons).

Hey guys, glad you like it! Yeah it took me a long time to finish it. Everything kind of happened at the right time. I had just gotten laid off from Disney World where I was a scenic artist, which is one of the people who paint and make props for the parks. While working there I got a lot of experience with spray guns, mixing paint, bondoing (everything at Disney has bondo on it!).
So I was living with my parents, no job, lots of work space and tools from my step dad, no time limit, etc. I can't imagined doing it again on that scale but I'm glad I did!

Nice job on the painting there. Thats a good idea using the tracing paper and charcoal. I want to redo the artwork on a pacman cab, but have nothing to repaint. The vinyl junk from two bits is overpriced, I doubt I will like the look of it even if it wasnt a question of the money. Thoughts have come to mind for me of using some of the art available and having it printed using a color printer on a decal sheet or some type of mylar. I fiquire that can be done fairly easy then used on a overhead projector( like the teachers used in school ) to have the image shined on the cabinet and traced out. Hey maybe it wont work. It's a thought

Yeah the pac man art might actually work well with the tracing paper technique, since the art is relatively simple (compared to Centipede for example). I believe some one makes stencils that you use to spray your own paint on the cab, but I can't remember who. The overhead projector is a good idea, as long as you can keep in the right scale. Not sure how you'd transfer it to the acetate and then project it back on the cab keeping it the right size.
As far as the hours go, I'm not really sure. On just the cabinet art I'd say it took me a good two weeks, working on it everyday.

I recall reading about a Pac restoration where the guy did use an overhead projector for the artwork.
It came out really nice.

It is a beautiful job you did there. Just having the patience to do that is a miracle.

So when you started painting the yellow.. you had to tape/mask off the blue you just painted then?
and would have had to do the same to the yellow, but you then decided to hand paint and skip the taping?
Very Nice... takes a steady hand and skill for sure...
With my Ms Pac, I was hoping to get some matching paint, yellow mostly, and touch up some gouges/scratches at least.
Hopefully I can get something very close to matching

Yeah the pink was mostly done by hand on the characters. Actually the little ghosts on the bottom of the front and sides was done by hand too. I taped off the yellow and blue and sprayed the pink on the straight line areas.
The good thing about yellow was that it was pretty translucent, so I could make out the black outlines underneath when relined them.
If you are thinking of doing any touch ups, I think yellow is actually the easiest color to match out of the 3 on there. Any of the primary colors are easier, really. The pac yellow is pretty much straight up "yellow". It may have to be muted down a little with some white, depending on your cab's fade.
Here's a cool link I came across:
http://www.oleszakcreative.com/paint.asp
They list Ms pac-man yellow as "Glidden 'Sunny Side Up'".
I think that's what most people use if I remember.

Wow. You did a phenomenal job. I have no idea how some of you people do it that are talented with a paint brush. That came out great!
