Since this got bumped, I would definitely buy a game just for the parts, especially if the cabinet had enough damage.

I really don't like doing that but sometimes if its a working game that's almost literally falling apart, its not so bad. At least that way, you have a chance to save another game that might otherwise end up junked.

Yea I have done it but try not to. Its a PITA in my area to get rid of cabs. No good areas to dump cabs w/o getting caught. Cutting them up is ok, but the jackalopes that provide the trashbins make them narrow so you have to cut the cabs into a million pieces. What I should do is take it to an auction and sit it outside and say "Free".

Wow, I'm bringing this thread back from the dead. Oh well I'm a little bored. Anyway... that's why I don't mind having doubles of games. I like to have extra parts just in case. Though I have never bought a game yet just for parts. I'm thinking of swapping trackballs on my MCs, putting the better trackball in the better cabinet.

If its an entire game, i will try to resurrect it depending on cab damage, if its missing parts, ect ill cannabalize it down to the screws holding it together. Sort of a waste not want not kinda guy http://forums.lymphoma.com/forums.arcade-museum.com/images/ubbgraemlins/laugh.gif Only complete game that i have cannabalized was a hoop it up, (redemption, so it doesnt really count) because it was too far away for me to get the whole thing and i needed the parts http://forums.lymphoma.com/forums.arcade-museum.com/images/ubbgraemlins/tongue.gif

Only if the cabinet is in really bad shape. A couple of times though I went ahead and fixed the cabinet and found the parts I was looking for elswhere.

I bought my first game just for the cabinet, thinking I'd do a multi game unit. Then I found a PCB for the game on ebay and for a hair over $100 total investment, I have a working Jailbreak game.

Oh yeah, I've purchased several games for parts - keep in mind they were all converted, and dead or had major problems. For instance, I once grabbed a partially working Primal Rage in a converted Joust cab for $45.00. PCB had display issues, marquee was a color copy on printer paper, control panel overlay was a generic "kung fu" design, and the inside of the cabinet was a mold farm.

But the monitor looked absolutely brand new!

I brought it home, removed the monitor, and installed in my Track & Field cocktail as an upgrade where it has happily resided ever since.

I kept the Primal Rage PCB, but junked the rest. The mold was too strong to even try to sell it as an empty cabinet for somebody to MAME.

That being said, I've never purchased a nice original classic game to gut for parts though, and I don't think I ever will.

The key word is "nice". I have bought a few working games that had cabs that were far beyond reasonable repair just for the parts. That way, when I find a nice cab (sometimes gutted) I can bring it back!

I've only done it once. I picked up a 'non working' Robotron at the Allentown Pinball show last year that overall wasn't in bad shape. But I had no way to bring the whole machine home so it got stripped and the cab tossed in a dumpster. I bought it to resurrect a Joust that I was de-converting from an 8-liners machine. When I got all the parts home, I found out the only thing it needed was a cap kit for the monitor to be working. So I killed a 1/2 decent Robotron (which I hate anyhow) to bring a nice Joust back from the dead.

The best deal I found was for 3 games that were sitting outside under a tarp. I knocked on the door to ask about the games and he sold me a Tron, Asteroids, and a old machine with a qbert Marquee on it for $90.00. All needed to be parted out due to water damage, but the tron worked great, asteroids needed the board repaired and the machine that had the qbert marquee on it had a working bootleg board in it. Never found a deal like that again.......... http://forums.lymphoma.com/forums.arcade-museum.com/images/ubbgraemlins/ooo.gif

i once picked up 5 photo booth games that all had good vga 19" eygo monitors with no burn and all had bill validators for a total of $300. i got about $115 out of each of the validators and used a few of the monitors and sold off the others. Then crushed the cabs

I've never bought a game for parts, but I was given a game that was in pretty bad shape. I finally got around to it and finished stripping it the other day. I hated to do it, but it was in really bad shape.

1 for me, My intentions was not to destroy it but to disassemble and make a new cab out of Hard Driven. I was given 2 cabs that were beyond heavy water logged that I scrapped what I could from it.

I just bought an Alien vs Predator conversion from a Pit Fighter for $70. The k4700 isn't firing up, so he just wanted to get rid of it.

I just wanted the CPS2 A board, but came away with much, much more!

Demolition derby for the video board. Several junk pole positions for go7's and pedals, steering wheels and optics. Also a junk pole position cockpit the only thing that was any good was the board and the bezel go figure.
